IISEIE Helping Africa to Develop a Local Software Economy
Abuja, Nigeria, August 19, 2010 --(PR.com)-- The International Institute of Software Economics, Innovation and Entrepreneurship (IISEIE) was the key note speaker at a workshop earlier this month on the promotion of local software economies in Africa.
Held in Abuja, Federal Republic of Nigeria, the workshop was held as a pre-event of the Third Conference of the African Union Ministers in charge of Communication and Information Technologies, that was held in Abuja from 3 to 7 August 2010.
Microsoft, in partnership with the African Union Commission, the Federal Republic of Nigeria, hosted the one day workshop which was attended by over 45 delegates from across Africa, discussed the challenges and key priorities in establishing and growing local software economies in Africa.
Malcolm Fraser, CEO of IISEIE introduced the Local Software Economy Kick Start Program at the workshop, which is aimed at providing emerging economies with a robust and measurable framework from which to develop and grow a software industry inside their national economy.
The program consists of three phases that:
- Establish an understanding of the key success factors to growing a software industry, implementing best practices for hi-tech cluster growth and developing software entrepreneurs.
- Establish a national framework that identifies the core priorities inside a national economy for software sector development, and the key areas of focus that could positively impact software industry development and growth
- Provides a repeatable process to developing and implementing regional and local programs that are aligned with the core national priorities and areas of focus identified in phase 2 above.
The workshop also established that the development of a vibrant and growing software industry has a significant impact on economic and social development of a national economy and provides a strong basis for global competitiveness.
The participants resolved to use the Kick Start Program to drive innovation, incubate software start ups and develop local economy research data specifically for Africa.
