Cancer Stricken Teen Has Shopping Spree Wish Granted
A teen with cancer had his wish for a shopping spree at Jordan’s Furniture granted through the help of children’s charity Kids Wish Network and local sponsors in Massachusetts.
South Easton, MA, August 19, 2010 --(PR.com)-- When he was only a year old, it was found that Mark had a cancerous Wilm’s tumor in his body. The tumor was removed through surgery along with one of his kidneys when he was just a child.
For years, Mark thought he was cancer-free and then, in 2009, he was found to have a rare form of cancer that spreads along the nerve cells in the arms and legs called Peripheral Nerve Sheath Sarcoma. The tumor was on the nerve cells in Mark’s left arm, up around his shoulder and some of it was removed through a surgery on his left shoulder blade and muscle. During this surgery, surgeons had to take his shoulder muscle apart and then reattach it once the tumor was removed. Afterwards, Mark needed a skin graft to replace the removed skin on his back. Mark also underwent seven rounds of chemotherapy as well as five weeks of radiation therapy. Unfortunately, these treatments wreaked havoc on his already weak system and caused decreased lung functionality, heart irregularities and damage to his remaining kidney.
While undergoing treatment at the hospital, Mark’s doctor told Mark and his mother about Kids Wish Network, a national charity dedicated to granting the wishes of kids and teens dealing with life-threatening wishes; Mark’s doctor thought that Mark well deserved a wish.
When asked what he wanted more than anything else, Mark told his Kids Wish Network wish coordinator that he wanted to have a shopping spree at Jordan’s Furniture in order to furnish his new apartment.
With the help of the Eastern Firefighters Local 2790 and the Baalis Sanford Lodge in Brockton, Kids Wish Network and Jordan’s Furniture worked together to grant Mark’s wish.
On the day that Mark was to come in for his shopping spree, Mark and his mother were surprised to see the marquee at the front of the store proclaiming, “Welcome, Mark!” in big, bold letters. According to Mark’s mom, Laura, “It was amazing!”
Mark was met and accompanied on his shopping spree by a Store management, who said that “the Rogers family, especially Mark, had a wonderful time at our store.”
While he was there, Mark decided on a fantastic living room set that included a “beautiful” black leather loveseat and couch along with two end tables, a coffee table and a TV stand. After selecting his new furniture, the Jordan’s Furniture team even gave Mark and his family tickets to enjoy the amazing Motion Odyssey Movie Ride in 4-D as well as the store’s laser light and music show.
According to Jordan’s Store management, Mark’s mom wanted to thank Jordan’s and she was especially impressed because his name on the marquee out front. It made her so happy that she cried.
As an extra surprise, Mark’s Kids Wish Network wish coordinator arranged for Mark and his family to enjoy a meal to the Capital Grill after the shopping spree. There, they were treated like VIPs with a private table, iridescent confetti and a private table.
“It was all really nice,” said Laura of Mark’s wish. “We got great treatment. Thank you.”
