Poster Competition Winner Announced by Longview Art & World Music Festival
Kansas City, MO, August 28, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Local resident Ramon Magee has been selected as the winner of The Longview Art & World Music Festival 2010 Poster Competition. Ramon Magee is a professional photographer and a juried member of Summit Art. In addition to winning the poster design, his work will be on display during the Longview Art & World Music Festival. Ramon has participated in the event since its onset 3 years ago. Ramon Magee attended the Columbus College of Art & Design prior to joining Hallmark Cards, Inc. His professional career of 39 years there included artistic, management, engineering, and project management responsibilities. Since retirement, he is fulfilling his long time desire for a full time career in fine art photography. He is a passionate photographer whose work has been exhibited in numerous juried and "one man" shows. His work has won many coveted awards. He continues to be involved in photography and art organizations. Ramon lectures and gives seminars at various organizations sharing his passion and skills for art and photography.
When asked about his poster design Magee stated "I wanted to integrate this lamp into the design. The association of a fine art festival, with historical art and the festival location was inescapable."
The image depicted by Ramon in the winning design is that of a light fixture that was salvaged from the Show Barn during renovations at Longview Farm. Later research revealed that originally there were three lamps which all hung from the ceiling of the Show Horse Arena, now the Longview Farm Elementary School, (1001 SW Longview Park Dr Lee’s Summit, MO). These have been documented in a 1916 photograph of the Arena. It was later found that the lamp is a Tiffany, and was custom ordered for Longview Farms from New York. It can be viewed on display at R.A. Longs Sawmill Restaurant in Longview.
When asked about his inspiration for this design Magee made this statement "I was observing an exhibit of the R. A. Long Farm historical artifacts presented by Gale Communities Inc. I was captivated by the striking artistic integration of glass and metal that was a very large global shaped lamp. My thoughts were that it was very much like a three-dimensional stained glass window.
"Then I made the association with the Art Nouveau style of the "flowered globe" Tiffany lamps produced by Tiffany Studios. The first lamps were created around 1895. Close examination of the workmanship and detail indicated to me that this was truly a piece of art and significant history. As I photographed this Tiffany Lamp, I tried to place myself as an observer at its creation. Cutting of the glass, wrapping the edges, with copper, soldering all of the joints, sculpting and casting of the framework."
Magee’s poster design will be used widely for publicity, on the art festival website, in postcards, and on other printed material. Posters will be available for sale in the Summit Art information booth at the festival.
The 3rd Annual Longview Art & World Music Festival will be held October 1-3, 2010 in The New Longview Shopping district located in Lee’s Summit, MO. The event is a free, outdoor, 3-day festival of fine arts that will feature 90 local, regional and national artists. Great food, drinks and small music groups add to the atmosphere of the exciting weekend festivities till 9 pm Friday and Saturday evening.
