Pathways to Preparedness Plans Virtual Preparedness Drills for the Home

Homeowners seldom get to practice their emergency plans until an emergency happens. To celebrate National Emergency Preparedness Month, these email-based exercises give families a chance to improve their preparedness.

Littleton, CO, September 01, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Pathways to Preparedness, LLC, a Littleton-based self-reliance skills training company, is pleased to announce a series of virtual preparedness drills for families. As a part of National Preparedness Month in September, the five drills will be sent out in an email to subscribers. Each email contains details of an emergency situation ranging from severe weather to flu quarantine. The emails are designed to encourage participants to think about their emergency plans and put them to use. Participants are expected to use their emergency evacuation or survival kits, eat from their 72 hour food kit, go to their designated evacuation points, and make notifications to their out of town contacts so that they can get practical experience to prepare for a real crisis situation.

“We are excited to be bringing this event to Colorado,” said Lisa Akers, co-founder of Pathways to Preparedness. “This is a free series of emails that allows our communities a chance to practice their own emergency plans. So many times the emergency exercises are for first responders. This one is for the rest of the community. We encourage everyone to sign up and bring their neighbors, friends, and families into the exercise. All are welcome, regardless of their location.”

Participation in the exercises may be tailored to each family’s specific situation. Prior engagements and work/school conflicts will interfere with a full-day’s exercise, but participants can simulate their actions and take notes about what they would do in an actual emergency. The exercises are not intended to shut down a family’s activities, but to stimulate serious thinking about their emergency preparedness. A survey will follow each emergency email and the findings will be published in a summary report posted at the Pathways to Preparedness website.

Registration in the program is open to anyone age 18 and older and is offered at no charge. Participants may sign up at http://www.pathwaystopreparedness.com/emergency-drills. An online discussion will be available on the website, and links to the discussion pages will be included in each emergency situation email. To prepare for the Virtual Emergency Drills, participants should download emergency planning forms from the registration website. Complete the forms and prepare your emergency kits in advance.
