American Society of Civil Engineers names Dr. Jon Miller of Stevens Institute of Technology the 2010 Educator of the Year for the North Jersey Branch.

Hoboken, NJ, September 02, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Dr. Jon Miller ’99, ASCE, Research Assistant Professor in Civil, Environmental and Ocean Engineering, has received the 2010 Educator of the Year Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) North Jersey Branch. This award is given annually to an instructor who has made a significant impact within the engineering community, both on campus and in industry, and is nominated by student members of the local ASCE branch.

Dr. Miller graduated from Stevens Institute of Technology in 1999 with a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, and earned a Master’s and Ph.D. in Coastal Engineering from the University of Florida. He returned to Stevens in 2005 and is currently investigates the processes that alter and impact shorelines and coastal zones.

“Jon is quite a talented educator. This award is just one more acknowledgement of his dedication and contributions to his students,” says Dr. Alan Blumberg, Director of the Center for Maritime Systems (CMS) at Stevens. “Jon also is an outstanding researcher with many quality publications. We are very fortunate to have him as part of the CMS.”

In addition to Dr. Miller’s research and teaching activities at Stevens, he is actively involved in the study of erosion and other impacts to New Jersey’s coastline at CMS. He is Assistant Director of the New Jersey Coastal Protection Technical Assistance Service and the NJ Sea Grant Coastal Processes Specialist, and routinely collaborates with state officials to assess coastal problems and review project proposals. As an instructor, he teaches both undergraduate and graduate level courses that prepare Stevens alumni for careers in civil, naval, and ocean engineering.

This achievement will mark the third time in four years that a Stevens faculty member has accepted the North Jersey Branch Educator of the Year Award. Dr. Leslie Brunell ’86, ASCE took home the award in 2007, and Dr. Thomas Wakeman III, ASCE was honored in 2008.
