Editors Only Article - Should Publishers Give Up on Print?

Announcing the publication of a new article in the Editors Only online newsletter. Managing editor Denise Gable asks top publication editors about the future of their print publications.

New Britain, CT, September 03, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Are print editions still viable? Editors Only managing editor Denise Gable takes this question to the streets in the August 2010 issue of the newsletter. In "Giving Up on Print," she asks four publication editors about the current success of and future plans for their print editions.

This spring, Editors Only (http://editorsonly.com) and STRAT (http://stratnewsletter.com) asked publishers and editors about their plans for their online editions. The results varied--some publications had already given up their print editions, some had always been online only, some enjoyed a thriving multiplatform presence (digital, print, social media, etc.), and still others declared the print edition to be their most lucrative component.

"Print still plays a major role in the lives of passionate enthusiasts," says Jon Phillips, editorial director of Maximum PC and Mac|Life. "As editors, the key thing to remember is that people who buy magazines are looking for an entertainment experience, meaning they receive entertainment from learning more about subjects that really interest them." It is important, therefore, for publications to do more than "solely satisfy information needs. The Web does this better," says Phillips.

Ultimately, concludes Meredith Dias in an August 2010 article in the STRAT newsletter, "print can do things that digital cannot, and vice-versa. There is, at least for the time being, a place for both in the new media landscape."
