IJIS Institute Partners with Major City Chiefs Association

Ashburn, VA, September 04, 2010 --(PR.com)-- The IJIS Institute, a nonprofit organization that focuses on mission-critical information sharing for justice, public safety, and homeland security, welcomes the Major City Chiefs Association (MCC) as its Alliance Partner.

MCC is a professional organization of police executives representing the largest cities in the United States and Canada. The MCC provides a unique forum for urban police, sheriffs and other law enforcement chief executives to discuss common problems, to share information and problem-solving strategies. MCC articulates the public safety needs of large cities in the formulation of criminal justice policy.

MCC membership is comprised of the chiefs of the sixty-three largest police departments in the United States and Canada. The Association was founded in the late 1960’s when these departments started meeting on a regular basis to share strategies, technology, and influence. The fifty-six U.S. cities represented in MCC are America’s centers of industry, transportation, education, and commerce. Their police departments provide public safety services to roughly forty percent of America’s population. MCC’s U.S. members are also active in advisory roles to the Department of Justice, the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Defense, and are frequently invited to testify before Congress. Recognizing the impact of the longest undefended border in the world, the seven largest cities in Canada are also members of MCC.

The association is non-partisan, serving member departments and the citizens of both nations and all political parties. MCC strives to provide effective solutions to modern day urban problems, and well as prevent, protect against, and respond to crime and hostile acts launched against the U.S. or Canada.

The IJIS Institute relies heavily on partnerships with key practitioner organizations, national associations, other nonprofit organizations, and universities in its effort to harness the expertise of industry in working toward improved information sharing between organizations involved in justice, public safety, and homeland security. The members of the IJIS Institute’s Alliance Partner program are organizations that share the belief that information sharing is a national priority and the conviction to work together in partnerships to address this national need.

“In an era of shrinking local government budgets and increased demands for law enforcement service, it is critical that our MCC members be able to share critical information with our local, state, federal, and international partners,” states Rob Davis, chief of police in San Jose, California, who serves as president of MCC. “It is our hope that our association with the IJIS Institute will help us continue to advance the sharing of information as we collaborate with our partners to fight crime.”

Paul Wormeli, executive director of the IJIS Institute, noted, “The Major Cities Chiefs are leading the way in formulating new models of advanced policing, where data and information can support more informed decisions about using resources for crime prevention, thereby blending informed police thinking with modern technology, such as predictive analytics. The IJIS Institute is eager to work with the MCCA to help implement these forward thinking ideas on a national scale.”
