“Died two times, in fact,” the surgeon tells Johnson Adefila after his dramatic open heart surgery for a triple by-pass.

After one night and a following morning of nausea and tightness in his chest, his wife rushes Johnson to the emergency room. Within minutes of his arrival, she signs for the triple by-pass surgery and her husband is whisked off into the operating room.

The empirical fact is that his aorta is completely blocked.

The hidden truth is that God’s grace has kept him alive -- on the trip to the hospital, during the first operation, and during his recovery afterward through a two week induced coma and a second surgery to remove two cancerous growths discovered in his colon.

Johnson then comes to realize that the Lord has revealed to him beforehand through two dreams – one of his wife’s and one of his son-in-law’s –what would happen to him and let him know that He was not yet ready to claim his soul.

God’s grace has been keeping Johnson alive throughout his physical ordeal.

A Matter of Life and Death is a remarkable personal testimony to the supremacy of God’s revealed truth over the empirical facts of our physical existence.
