Tale of Five Daughters’ Dreams and Demons: The Sullivan Sisters, Published by Outskirts Press
Allentown, NJ, September 07, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Mary Walling-Roche announced today the release of her play, The Sullivan Sisters, published by Outskirts Press. The dramatic tale covers more than a quarter century of the lives of five independent sisters struggling to define themselves against the strong -- and to some, stultifying -- family background they came from in this strict pre-war era.
Walling-Roche’s play follows the dreams and goals of five young women, each of whom also had her own demons about leaving the “Family.”
Maura was wildly dramatic and aspired to college, but mother and father told her she should be married, not educated. Diedra, mother’s favorite, would be the first to marry and leave home. Una, calm, but terribly strong willed, was about to enter the Order of the Sisters of St. Joseph. Nell, the baby, was sweet and shy, but usually felt left out of her sisters’ camaraderie and shenanigans. Bridey was feisty and quick of tongue and the most eager to leave the family’s “oppressive” rules.
These five girls sometimes teased each other, sometimes helped each other, sometimes cajoled each other, and in these days well before Women’s Lib, Walling-Roche shows how the dynamics of this strict Irish immigrant family pressed different molds on each of the five daughters.
With its span of time and breadth of personalities, The Sullivan Sisters holds a message today for any daughter of any background of any time.
