Father Finally Has to Face Loss of the Son He Loved in SonSet, Published by Outskirts Press
Erda, UT, January 31, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Author G. H. Larrivee, Jr., today announced the release of SonSet, A Memoir of Family Dysfunction, published by Outskirts Press. Larrivee looks without blinders at three generations of his family and discovers that the ongoing dysfunction in it – which he wryly dubs “The Larrivee Syndrome” – has been one that he could not overcome, even while trying for so long to prevent it’s affect on his son.
The history of Larrivee’s family has included abandonment and alcoholism in the distant past and bigotry and racism in the author’s more immediate childhood. “Mom never really knew where Dad was most of the time and she made herself insane over it,” Larrivee writes.
Larrivee resolves never to be that kind of father or husband.
Knowing too little of love, however, he finds himself at eighteen with a girl who “wasn’t my first choice,” but who was pregnant with his child. He marries her, she leaves him, and he is left to raise his son as a single parent. A second marriage, good in itself, brings conflict between a new stepson and his own offspring, still blaming his father for the “loss” of his mom.
Despite the author’s dream of mending their relationship, no reconciliation has been possible and Larrivee has had to learn how to survive the loss of a son, just as if he had died.
Larrivee acknowledges that his original bad mouthing of his son’s mother after she left him tainted the boy’s view of him as a father. His son, understandably, needed to defend his mother. That level of candor makes SonSet a unique autobiographical account that proves magnetic both in Larrivee’s self-deprecating humor and in his honest acceptance of a responsibility that many parents would not be capable of.
SonSet is available on-line in paperback through Amazon and Barnes and Noble and at www.outskirtspress.com/bookstore for a maximum trade discount in quantities of ten or more.
