The Teenager Who Will Forever Make a Difference

Second Annual “Volley for Molly” Tournament to raise money for Ovarian Cancer.

Lexington, MA, September 10, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Ovations for the Cure of Ovarian Cancer, a national organization dedicated to research, patient support programs and raising awareness of ovarian cancer has rejoined forces for a second year with Lexington High School for “Volley for Molly,” a High School Volleyball Tournament fundraiser in memory of their former student, Molly Eisenberg. Molly passed last October of ovarian cancer at the young age of nineteen, although her spirit lives on through this event.

In 2009 and in recognition of National Ovarian Cancer Awareness month, Lexington High School hosted Volley for Molly in honor of their friend Molly Eisenberg. This fundraiser is led by her previous volleyball coach, Jane Bergin; this event raised almost $15,000 for ovarian cancer research, awareness and patient programs. Molly was able to view the event that hosted over 1,000 people through a live internet feed.

Just one week into college, Molly was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Though she had numerous surgeries and chemotherapy treatments, she lost her courageous battle on October 21, 2009. In her online guestbook found at www.ovationsforthecureorg, one person describes the loss felt on this day: “The world lost a most extraordinary young woman today. . . Molly died the way she lived—with spirit and energy and humor and grace, and in so doing, taught us many important lessons about life, about family and friends, about community and caring, about sports and sportsmanship, about giving, and caring, and sharing, and about the importance of looking out for one another. And about never giving up. She has left a permanent legacy. From across the country, fighting for her life, she impacted not just a town, but a much larger community of people across Massachusetts who proudly, prayerfully, poignantly, volleyed for Molly with all their hearts, and who tonight, sadly, but with more pride and love and determination than ever, wipe tears from their cheeks, and pledge that Molly, and her life, and her struggle, shall not be forgotten. With heartfelt condolences to the Eisenberg family for their unspeakable loss, we pray that she may now rest in eternal peace.”

Molly’s love for life and laughter will not be forgotten. Her spirit lives on through Volley for Molly and through the many lives she has touched during her nineteen years. “Ovations is honored to be a part of Molly’s legacy,” says Lisa Collamore Tocci of Ovations for the Cure of Ovarian Cancer. “The years stolen from Molly’s life will not be wasted; we will do everything we can to stop this insidious disease from taking any more women.”

“Molly approached the sport of volleyball the same way she lived her life. Her positive energy and spirit was a catalyst for enthusiasm that inspired her friends, teammates, coaches, and family. Through “Volley for Molly,” our school community discovered a love for the human spirit that we thought was once lost. Many students, teachers, coaches, and merchants, discovered that a crisis is an opportunity to pull together. This was indicative of Molly’s life. She rose above this disease by lifting others. I will always be inspired by her courage while she was fighting this disease! We should all love and enjoy life as Molly did during her time with us. It is an honor to be able to host the Second Annual “Volley for Molly” event in Lexington.” Jane Bergin, Volleyball Coach at Lexington High School.

Volley for Molly will take place at the Ralph Lord Gymnasium at Lexington High School on September 24, 2010 from 4:00-9:30 p.m. This event is sponsored by Morphotek. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the door. Sponsorship opportunities are still available. For more information please visit www.ovationsforthecure.org or www.volleyformolly.org.

About Ovations for the Cure
Ovations for the Cure, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to the relentless pursuit of a cure for ovarian cancer in three critical ways. First, by providing critical funding of new and ongoing ovarian cancer research and treatment initiatives. Second, by actively increasing the awareness of the subtle signs and symptoms of this silent disease. Third, by giving hope, education and comfort to those currently battling ovarian cancer through its patient programs. The organization was founded in 2006 by nine-year ovarian cancer survivor Patricia Franchi Flaherty, who also lost her mother to the disease. Patty decided to dedicate her life to raising awareness of the risk factors and subtle warning signs of this often overlooked women’s cancer so no other women would have to endure what she did.
