Another Milestone in the IHPA’s "Get the Number Campaign" Helping Consumers Make the Right Choices in Hurricane Protection Products

“Attorney General Bill McCollum today issued a consumer advisory warning Floridians about window film companies that have sold or are selling products to residential homeowners as “hurricane protection.”

Lantana, FL, September 16, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Thomas Johnston, President of the International Hurricane Protection Association (IHPA), announced today that the IHPA endorses and applauds the consumer warning issued by Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum. Johnston further noted that the IHPA urges other hurricane prone States and regions to follow suit as the issue is not a problem in Florida alone.

Well over a year ago, the IHPA launched its “Get The Number” consumer advisory campaign. This simple campaign advises the consumer that when considering hurricane protection for their home, they should insist upon a product approval/evaluation number from a legitimate agency such as the Florida Building Commission, Miami-Dade County, or Texas Dept. of Insurance. To date, no window film has been able to pass all tests required for residential hurricane protection. Products which pass some but not all tests will not be awarded an approval and in most cases will not qualify for the wind mitigation insurance discounts available for approved products.

The Sept. 9th News Release from Attorney General McCollum further states:

“Attorney General McCollum offers the following recommendations to consumers to avoid falling victim to dealers who may be misrepresenting the film’s capabilities:

· Ask to see the product approval and the corresponding number;

· Go to www.floridabuilding.org and/or www.miamidade.gov/buildingcode/ to assure that the number supplied is verifiable;

· Check with your local building department. Most building departments require a permit to install hurricane protection; and

· Report any company that is making fraudulent claims about window film.

Consumers who believe they may be victims of fraud may contact the Attorney General’s fraud hotline at 1-866-9-NO-SCAM (1-866-966-7226) or file an online complaint at http://myfloridalegal.com.”
