Ground-Breaking Panel on Youth Risk Online to Kick Off Major International Bullying Conference

Seattle, WA, September 16, 2010 --(PR.com)-- An unprecedented full day panel on youth risk online will kick off the 7th Annual Conference of the International Bullying Prevention Association in Seattle this November 15th – 17th. “To my knowledge, this is the first time that this many high quality researchers and risk prevention professionals who are focused on youth risk online will be cooperating for one event,” said Nancy Willard, Executive Director of the Center for Safe and Responsible Internet Use and panel coordinator.

The panel will set the theme for this year’s conference, which is “Challenge and Promise of the Cyberworld: Bullying Prevention in the Age of the Internet.” Many of the themes introduced during the panel will be elaborated on by panel members in breakout sessions on the 16th and 17th. The conference will feature more than sixty presenters, including three keynote speakers, an international panel, a federal panel, and 41 breakout sessions. Approximately half of the presentations will deal with cyberbullying and related Internet issues. Several presenters will be presenting on new research results.

The Youth Risk Online Panel will be broken down into six sessions: “The Challenges,” moderated by Larry Magid, Co-Director of ConnectSafely.org and founder of SafeKids.com, who writes for CNET News, CBSNews.com, Huffington Post and the San Jose Mercury News and has authored several books on online safety; “Positive School - and Online – Climate,” moderated by Anne Collier, editor of NetFamilyNews.org, co-director of ConnectSafely.org, and founder and executive director of Net Family News; “Engaging Youth,” moderated by Dr. Magid; “Investigations and Interventions,” moderated by Ms. Collier; “The Larger Cyberworld,” moderated by Dr. Magid; and a panel wrap-up, moderated by Ms. Willard.

Panel members include Drs. Sameer Hinduja and Justin Patchin, co-authors of Bullying Beyond the Schoolyard: Preventing and Responding to Cyberbullying; Robin Sax, a former LA County Prosecutor and currently a Legal Analyst for NBC News, who has appeared on dozens of national shows, including the Dr. Phil show, Tyra Banks, CNN Larry King, HLN Nancy Grace, and the Today Show; Stan Davis, co-leader of the Youth Voice Research Project, which has collected information from more than 11,000 young people in the United States about what works and what doesn't work in bullying prevention (Mr. Davis will present research results in a breakout session on November 17th); Patricia Agatston, co-author of the book, Cyber Bullying: Bullying in the Digital Age; Andrew Agatston, an attorney in private practice in Marietta, Georgia, who has advised and assisted those who have been targets of cyber bullying; Warren J. Blumenfeld, Ed.D, co-editor of Readings for Diversity and Social Justice; Co-Editor of Investigating Christian Privilege and Religious Oppression in the United States; Editor of Homophobia: How We All Pay the Price; and Co-author of Looking at Gay and Lesbian Life; Linda Burch, who leads Common Sense Media's education, program and strategy development efforts and has been the architect of the organization's digital media strategy; Det. Frank Dannahey, a 29 year veteran of Law Enforcement; Mike Donlin, recently with Seattle City Schools, who has shifted his activities into research, consulting, and professional development related to youth risk online and educational technology concerns; Elizabeth Englander, professor of Psychology & the founder & Director of the Massachusetts Aggression Reduction Center at Bridgewater State College, which delivers free anti-bullying programs, resources, & research for the state of Massachusetts; Lisa Jones, a Research Assistant Professor of Psychology at University of New Hampshire and author or co-author on several papers on Internet crimes against children as well as numerous papers on other aspects of child victimization; Rebekah Sills Lamm, a Youth Education Specialist at Texas School Safety Center; Sylvia Martinez, President of Generation YES, evangelizing student involvement in education reform through technology integration and service learning; Donnel Nunes, a behavioral health specialist in Hawaii, who recently published a paper titled, “Technology and the Adolescent: Pairing Modern Media and Technology with Mental Health Practice;” Kim P. Sanchez, Sr. Audience Marketing Manager, Microsoft Corporation, responsible for strategic communications to worldwide consumer and government audiences on Microsoft’s work in computer privacy, security and online safety; Dr. Lance Gibbon, a 19-year public school educator in Washington State.
