NPSA Celebrates Container Industry Economic Outlook
The National Portable Storage Association (NPSA), a nonprofit membership association dedicated to the advancement of the portable storage industry, is celebrating the end of the recession for the container industry.
Kansas City, MO, September 18, 2010 --(PR.com)-- According to AXS Alphaliner, the demand for shipping containers is picking up. "Confidence has returned to the container shipping markets, with owners starting to place orders for new ships in significant numbers, overcoming concerns of overcapacity that have dominated the industry in the past 18 months," the company said. "While order cancellations and deferrals, as well as the idling and scrapping of excess tonnage, were still key concerns for the industry as recently as the first quarter of this year, these issues have now given way to renewed optimism."
John Finnessey, Executive Director of the NPSA, has been expecting the turnaround since earlier this year. He saw signs of an economic recovery in the Spring when Hamburg Sued, a German shipping line, announced it had shipped more containers during the first few months of 2010 than it did before the recession in the first few months of 2008. "We saw container traffic take a dive in 2009—up to 15 percent," Finnessey said. "But talk of overcapacity is stopping and container companies are optimistic about 2011 and beyond."
Joel Rathbone, Operations Manager for the NPSA, said with the recession coming to an end for the container industry, companies in the portable storage industry should gear up for a busier 2011. Attending the NPSA Conference and Trade show in Orlando, Fla. on Nov. 7-9 and the Resale Expo in Santa Barbara, Calif. in May 2011 can help equip portable storage operators for the opportunities ahead. "Now is the time to get ready to run," Rathbone says. "Our 2010 annual conference will offer you strategies to make the most out the container rebound."
