Internet Entrepreneur Jesse Willms Donates $25,000 to the Breast Cancer Research Fund
Portland, OR, September 17, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Internet marketing leader turned philanthropist Jesse Willms donated $25,000 to the Breast Cancer Research Fund today.
“I am proud to support the Breast Cancer Research Fund in their goal to help find a cure for this dreaded disease,” Willms said. “More than 1.5 million women a year are diagnosed with breast cancer. They deserve our help.”
The Breast Cancer Research Fund was established by Evelyn H. Lauder in 1993, with the intention of bringing about a cure for breast cancer in our lifetime. Larry Norton, MD, of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, has directed the Foundation's scientific activities since the beginning. In 2002, the BCRF expanded its mission to include prevention as well as a cure, reflecting the direction of its research grants aimed at prevention and treatment.
Since its inception, BCRF has increased its annual funding level more than 200 times over, with grants now supporting more than 170 scientists based in 10 countries.
“The Breast Cancer Research Fund is the only charity of its type to receive an A+ rating from the American Institute of philanthropy,” Willms said. “If you want to help make breast cancer a distant memory, like smallpox, there is no better charity for you to support.”
Willms is a well-known and respected Internet entrepreneur. He started making money online from home when he was 16 years old, buying and selling computers and software online. By the time he was 22 he had started several companies.
This summer, he was inspired by Bill Gates and Warren Buffett, who challenged successful businesspeople to donate a percentage of their profits to charity.
“I realized that they were right,” Willms said. “I didn't want to run my businesses simply to make money for myself. I wanted to run them so that they could help make the world a better place.”
Since then, Willms has supported a wide variety of charities, mostly those that help women and children or respond to natural disasters.
In fact, Willms gave $25,000 to three other charities today including:
Boston Children's Hospital
The Gulf Oil Restoration Fund
The Nevada YMCA
