Professor Souran Manoochehri of Stevens Elected ASME Fellow

Dr. Souran Manoochehri, Professor of Mechnical Engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology, has been selected a Fellow in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. This prestigious honor recognizes significant achievements and contributions to the engineering profession.

Hoboken, NJ, September 22, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Dr. Souran Manoochehri, Professor of Mechnical Engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology, The Innovation University (TM), has been recently selected a Fellow in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).

This prestigious honor recognizes significant achievements and contributions to the engineering profession. The appointment acknowledges Dr. Manoochehri’s achievements and international reputation for research in integrated product and process design with defense applications, and more recently micro-electro-mechanical systems.

“Professor Manoochehri has been instrumental in connecting the research community at Stevens to professional communities around the world,” says Dr. Michael Bruno, Dean of the Charles V. Schaefer, Jr. School of Engineering and Science. “His leadership has had far-reaching impact on the creators and users of high-tech products.”

Dr. Manoochehri is a leading expert on integrated product development and knowledge-based engineering systems. He is a co-founder previous director of Stevens Design and Manufacturing Institute (DMI), which under his leadership has become a nationally-recognized R&D organization. DMI advances practices and processes associated with the development of next-generation products, connecting academia, industry, and government in forward-thinking collaborations; including work with the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Army Armament, Research and Development Center (ARDEC).

Since the founding of DMI, Dr. Manoochehri’s leadership has enabled the organization to obtain more than $30 million in funding for research projects that continue to revolutionize engineers’ and manufacturers’ approach to product design and assembly.

In the field of micro-system research, Dr. Manoochehri has developed novel components for manipulating particles on the micro and nanoscale with increased pumping and mixing capacities with low power electrokinetic actuation mechanisms. He has also studied the behavior and characterization of micro/nano wire/thin film initiators for weapon fuzing applications. Using geometries with 100 micrometers or less in size —thinner than a strand of human hair—these initiators effectively deliver output with greater pressure and require less input voltage for successful ignition.

Dr. Manoochehri has authored over one hundred articles in professional journals, conference proceedings, and handbooks as well as two U.S. patents. He has received numerous awards for research, publishing, and teaching, including the ASME Design Engineering Division Award, the Defense Manufacturing Conference Best Paper Award, the ASME Mechanisms Conference Best Paper Award, and Pi Tau Sigma Distinguished Teaching Award. In 2008 he was the General Conference Co-chair for the ASME IDETC/CIE conference.

Several recent research projects have connected Dr. Manoochehri with the military. In concert with ARDEC, Dr. Manoochehri has been instrumental in developing the Micro Devices Laboratory (MDL), which explores new applications in munitions and defense using novel devices for energy generation and sensing. MDL designs are created using optimal practices that enable easy transmission between lab and manufacturer, cutting costs and time spent implementing new technologies at micro and nano scales. DMI has proven essential to the Army’s ability to incorporate the latest materials, assisting military engineers to create stronger and safer systems suited to new combat modes.

After graduating magna cum laude from Illinois Institute of Technology with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Dr. Manoochehri received an M.S. and PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He joined the Stevens faculty in 1989. Professor Manoochehri is a member of numerous university committees that support graduate students, faculty, and administrators at Stevens Institute of Technology.
