Arlington, VA, September 22, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Local general contracting firm Arlington Designer Homes recently received the first ever Gold-level Green Building Certification in Arlington from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). This new, custom-built green home, located on Underwood St. in North Arlington, is only the sixth house in the state of Virginia to be certificated at the Gold level. The home also received a HERS score (home energy rating) of 55, meaning it is 45% more energy efficient than a standard new home on the market today.

The house, designed by architect Howard Melton, also received Energy Star certification and was certified by the Arlington County Green Home Choice Program.

“This elegant, contemporary home includes numerous unique green features that reduce energy costs, including a solar hot water heater, Energy Star appliances, and spray-in foam insulation,” said Andrew Moore, president of Arlington Designer Homes. “But to achieve this level of green certification, we also had to incorporate green practices during every step of the design and construction process, from selecting a lot close to public transportation to recycling over 75% of leftover construction materials and waste.”

The National Green Building certification process includes inspections and review of lot and site development, resource efficiency, energy efficiency, water efficiency, indoor environmental quality, and homeowner education.

“While we’re extremely pleased that our newest home has received so many green awards, we’re even happier about the positive impact that green homes such as this one have for our customers and our community,” said Moore, a Certified Green Professional. “The green features included in this home will combine to reduce energy costs by 45%, prevent toxic off-gassing, seal out mold, allergens and pollutants, and reduce the home’s carbon output by over five tons per year.”

Arlington Designers Homes is currently building two new green homes in Falls Church City.
