Jason Craighead Adds "The Depth of Change" to Somerhill Show
Chapel Hill, NC, January 06, 2007 --(PR.com)-- When abstract expressionist Jason Craighead of Raleigh was invited to contribute a painting to Somerhill Gallery’s “things that are BLUE” exhibit, an exploration of artwork expressed with blue pigment, he knew immediately which of his recently completed canvases was perfect for the show: “The Depth of Change.”

“The Depth of Change” is a large work – 52”x60” – that captures the artist’s affinity for layering acrylic paint, pencil, pastel, and graphite to create spontaneous abstract compositions, with a base layer of long drips providing depth and direction. Yet it also represents a bit of a departure from the majority of his recent canvases.

“It seems to me that this piece represents a fresher, looser approach to painting for me,” he explained, “less bound up with line, more about the act of painting.”

And, of course, it’s vividly blue.

Jason Craighead, considered one of the leading abstract expressionists in the Southeast, has exhibited his work throughout the Southeastern United States in many group and solo exhibitions, and has received numerous awards. His strong patron base includes both large corporations and private collectors, including Presidential candidate and former U.S. Senator John Edwards. He is represented by galleries in Atlanta, Charlotte, Wilmington and Pinehurst. His work was recently featured in Art Galleries and Artists of the South.

The opening reception for “things that are BLUE” will be held Sunday, January 14, from 2-5 pm.

Now in its 33rd year, Somerhill Gallery is one of the most prestigious galleries in the Southeast, featuring abstract and representational artwork in all visual disciplines. The gallery is located in the Eastgate Shopping Center on East Franklin Street, Chapel Hill.
