Chicago Lighthouse Ushers in New Era with World Class Building Addition
12,000 square foot building addition allows non-profit agency to better serve the blind and visually impaired community in a critical time.
Chicago, IL, September 26, 2010 --(PR.com)-- In an effort to better serve the blind and visually impaired community as well as offer hope to members of the massive baby boom generation experiencing vision loss in the years ahead, The Chicago Lighthouse is unveiling a new building addition on September 29th that will offer world class amenities.
The expanded facility at the Lighthouse’s current headquarters building at 1850 W. Roosevelt Road will have an additional 12,000 square feet enabling the 104 year old agency to expand current programs and introduce new ones.
Highlights include an enlarged low vision clinic, which is already regarded as the most prominent in the U.S.; a new state-of-the-art "Tools for Living" retail store that promises an unparalleled shopping experience for customers who are blind or visually impaired; a nationally acclaimed legal clinic that has seen its space more than doubled; a world renowned employment services program; and the addition of Dr. Gerald Fishman, a world-renowned ophthalmologist, researcher and academic specializing in inherited retinal diseases who has relocated his practice to the Lighthouse.
"We are absolutely thrilled to be able to announce the successful completion of this building expansion and rehabilitation project," said Dr. Janet Szlyk, Lighthouse President and Executive Director. "Thanks to the generosity and support of so many outstanding donors, we are embarking on a new course that is establishing the Lighthouse as a global authority on vision care."
She noted that the Dedication Ceremony on September 29th will showcase the agency’s rich diversity, innovative programs, boundless enthusiasm as well as its overall feeling of hope for the future.
Founded in 1906, the Lighthouse is one of the nation’s oldest and most comprehensive social service organizations. Also housed under its roof are one of the few remaining manufacturing facilities in America producing clocks that are distributed around the world; a widely respected school for children who are blind with multi-disabilities; a world renowned employment services program; a VA program serving veterans in all 50 states; and a radio station.
