West Coast Wing Chun Essay Contest Bridges Gap to Underprivileged in Los Angeles
Long Beach, CA, September 29, 2010 --(PR.com)-- West Coast Wing Chun Bridge announces their first annual essay contest open to underprivileged kids and young adults ages 12 to 22.
Three contestants will be awarded attendance to Grandmaster Samuel Kwok's Wing Chun Seminar to be held in Belmont Shores, Ca. on October 9, 2010 and a chance to win 6 months of free Wing Chun Kung Fu classes with Sifu Bryan Talbot, head instructor for West Coast Wing Chun.
Grandmaster Samuel Kwok is renowned throughout the world for his passion and dedication to authentic, traditional Ip Man Wing Chun and in 1998 received a BA honor from Manchester University for his life time achievement and promotion of martial arts. It will be his first time teaching in California.
Sifu Bryan Talbot believes that Wing Chun changes lives. He explains Wing Chun's effectiveness is achieved through its skill and science rather than brute strength and is unique in that there are no set of predefined movements. Talbot explains that this kind of training builds intelligence and decision-making in the face of adversity.
In addition, Talbot explains that Wing Chun, to a large degree, is learning how to be calm in stressful situations and that relaxation takes discipline and hard work, “In fighting, a relaxed body and a calm state of mind creates an advantage. It allows you to move more quickly and effectively and with little perception from the opponent. This is the foundation of our art.”
Kung Fu literally means “hard work,” and students of West Coast Wing Chun not only learn the ethics in discipline and hard work, but also the values contained within the Ip Man's Code of Conduct, a creed for martial spirit. Talbot points out that the code of conduct stresses courtesy and righteousness, as well as a strong belief in giving back to the community. “Ip Man encouraged that martial artists participate in society and be gentle in manners. He encouraged students to help the weak and the very young, and to use martial skill for the good of humanity.”
The West Coast Wing Chun Bridge is doing just that. It is a new program within the West Coast Wing Chun organization whose mission is to provide underprivileged children and adults the opportunity to learn the values inherent Ip Man Wing Chun Kung Fu. Talbot explains, “If serious study is given to the practice and art of Wing Chun Kung Fu, one will not only walk a path of martial mastery, but also a path of self-mastery. Everyone deserves that opportunity.”
Talbot hopes to also get the community involved in sponsorship so that Wing Chun Kung Fu classes can become accessible to everyone. West Coast Wing Chun is sponsoring three essay contestants by granting free admission to Grandmaster Kwok's seminar. One of those students, who will be chosen by Grandmaster Kwok himself at the end of the seminar, will be granted six months of free classes.
However, Talbot encourages local businesses and even individuals to become involved as well. West Coast Wing Chun will match sponsorship that a business contributes. Talbot hopes to get all students who send in essay submissions sponsorship, “Finances should not prevent someone who wants to learn Kung Fu and improve their life the opportunity to do so.”
The essay should answer the question, “Why I want to learn Kung Fu” and should be sent to essaycontest@ipmankungfu.com by 11 pm., October 4, 2010.
