World-Renowned Pianist Angela Hewitt Gives Benefit Concert for WaterCan’s African Clean Water Projects
Ottawa, Canada, September 29, 2010 --(PR.com)-- On Sunday, October 24, 2010, internationally acclaimed Canadian pianist Angela Hewitt will play a concert to benefit WaterCan at the University of Saskatchewan’s Convocation Hall. Following the concert, Ms. Hewitt will be in attendance at a reception hosted by WaterCan and the University of Saskatchewan Music Department.
Angela Hewitt has been hailed as “nothing less than the pianist who will define Bach performance on the piano for years to come” (Stereophile). She began her piano studies aged three, performing in public at four and winning her first scholarship a year later. At nine she gave her first recital at Toronto’s Royal Conservatory of Music where she later studied, and went on to win top international music competition prizes and awards. Playing a vast repertoire including Beethoven, Schumann, Rameau, Ravel and Chopin, Angela Hewitt’s concerts and recordings are received to great critical acclaim around the world.
Ms. Hewitt was awarded the first ever BBC Radio 3 Listener’s Award in 2003, Gramophone Artist of the Year in 2006 and Midem Classical Instrumentalist of the Year in 2010. She was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2000, and the Order of the British Empire in 2006 by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. She has performed throughout North America and Europe as well as in Japan, Australia, Israel, and China. Her frequent Wigmore Hall and Royal Festival Hall recitals in London sell out months in advance.
A supporter of WaterCan’s vision of “Clean Water for All,” Ms. Hewitt has graciously supported WaterCan’s vital development work through previous concerts in Ottawa and Calgary. When asked why she chose to play for WaterCan, Ms. Hewitt’s answer was simple and profound: “So many people in the world suffer from a shortage of clean water – something all of us take for granted. I think of this every time I brush my teeth. I would like to do my part to help WaterCan’s activities, and to bring them to the attention of a wider public.”
Nearly 1 billion people worldwide do not have access to clean, safe drinking water. The world water and sanitation crisis is one of the most lethal, yet solvable, public health emergencies of our time, and condemns hundreds of millions to struggle for survival.
