Three Canadian Stars Commit to National Underclassmen Combine All-World Game
Mahwah, NJ, October 01, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Canadian gridiron stars Tyler Varga, Tevaun Smith and Brett Weir, all from Ontario, officially became the first international players to commit to the National Underclassmen Combine's All World Game.
Varga was amongst the NUC's elite from the 2010 combines. At 5'10 205, the powerfully built prospect took home RB MVP following the Detroit Combine en route to shining at both the Midwest Ultimate 100 and Top Prospect Camp, placing in the top three at his position at each camp. Varga, who is widely regarded as Canada's best prospect, has offers from Baylor and Dartmouth, in addition to generating interest from various other D1 programs.
A top performer during the 2009 season, Smith won WR MVP at the Midwest Ultimate 100 Camp. The athletic 6'1 165 lb Smith then took his talents to the Top Prospect Camp, ranking third amongst receivers from the entire class of 2011. His outstanding hands and solid fundamentals also helped him garner D1 interest while becoming one of the top players in the Great White North.
Weir, 6'4 220, earned various honors thus far on the football field, including Team Offensive MVP for a squad that made it to the finals in 2009. He is regarded as an extremely versatile player, starring at QB, WR and RB, while running his 40 yard dash in the 4.3 range. Along with Varga, Weir participated for Team Ontario in the Canada Cup.
"I am glad to have three of Canada's best players coming to our game," said NUC CEO & President David Schuman. "The sport is rapidly expanding beyond US borders and the point of the All-World Game is to showcase exceptional prospects from all four corners of the globe."
Schuman also believes that the Canadian trio can impact other young players in their nation.
"Varga, Smith and Weir are extremely popular and many younger kids look up to them. I don't believe Canadians players have ever competed in all-star games, so hopefully they can inspire football players for years to come and open the doors for those outside of the US."
The NUC All-World Gridiron Classic will showcase 114 elite high school seniors from all across the globe in a unique All-Star Game. Players from the two squads, Team NUC & Team World, will be drafted from the ground up by the coaching staff to ensure a level playing field.
There will also be a full week of events leading up to game day for select All-World Underclassmen including 7 on 7's, linemen challenges and a combine.
The NUC All-World Gridiron Classic kicks off from Columbia, SC at The Citadel's Johnson Hagood Stadium Friday, December 31, 2010 at 6 pm ET. Broadcast and ticket information will be announced shortly.
Since their inception in 2005, the National Underclassmen Combine guided more than 50,000 athletes from all walks of life. 70 percent of participants went on to play in college, with 20 percent earning D1 or D1AA scholarships. Notable alumni include Joe Haden of the Cleveland Browns, Kraig Appleton, Tyrod Taylor, Mason Walters, Tajh Boyd, Logan Heastie and Damien Thigpen amongst others.
