HOYCE Youth Center and XtraMedium Communications Train Area Youth in New Media
Youth from Chicago’s Englewood Community gain advantage through New Media for Community Development (NMCD) internship.
Chicago, IL, October 13, 2010 --(PR.com)-- This summer 12-area youth completed training on the tools and practices for creating, promoting and distributing their own entertainment content. During the 9-week program interns created an integrated new media campaign based on 3 episodes of their own online radio show, 3-online surveys, audio and video commercials featuring local supporting businesses, 5-basic websites and 1-ecommerce site for those supporting sponsors. They also featured music from independent artists from the Englewood community.
“The NMCD program assisted youth with understanding how media and advertising plays an intricate roll in our communities, how urban communities are and are not represented, as well as how to apply the tools learned to improve their communities”, Jennea A. Bivens, Executive Director H.O.Y.C.E. Youth Center.
The NMCD program is designed to provide interns with a quick on ramp to learn low-cost and zero-cost methods of rebranding the Englewood community through new media. Interns were expected to think outside the box to overcome the limitations associated with their community as well as their own. Rather than use exploratory methods, each intern utilized proven methods which combined youth development, technology, and local business development.
The program was developed by XtraMedium Communications LLC, a firm dedicated to the use of new media for community development. “Our goal was to show youth there are free tools available to develop and expose high quality entertainment programs which more accurately represent them and create revenue opportunities in the community,” Steven C. Philpott, CEO XtraMedium Communications LLC.
Interns learned how to transform their original ideas into creating storyboards for talk show scripts and commercials. Interns utlized web based tools Wix.com, ConstantContact, WordPress, Blogger, FreewebStore SurveyMonkey and Blogtalkradio. The NMCD program was developed as a confidence-course for young students who generally have had neither professional training nor employment in these course topics. Each intern received a certificate of completion and may employ their new media marketing skills in their own community or commercially.
The NMCD program was conducted in cooperation with Beloved Community Family Services’ Blueprint for Success program.
