Stevens Research VP Dr. Joseph Mitola Gives Keynote at Sustainable Technology Research Conference

Hoboken, NJ, October 16, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Dr. Joseph Mitola III, Vice President for The Research Enterprise and Distinguished Professor at Stevens Institute of Technology, was a keynote speaker at The Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Science (ICTAS) Research Day, where he addressed the future of cognition in communication technologies. As an interdisciplinary research center at Virginia Tech, ICTAS brings together engineering, science, biology, and the humanities to advance technologies that improve quality of life locally and globally, with a focus on transformation and sustainability. Held September 28 at the Skelton Conference Center on the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg, 2010 ICTAS Research Day brought together researchers and applied scientists to discuss the technologies most critically affecting our society.

Dr. Mitola joined an esteemed group of keynote speakers at the conference, each given in tandem by an ICTAS representative and an outside expert and featuring research thrust topics the form the ICTAS backbone. As a keynote speaker for the Cognition and Communication thrust, Dr. Mitola provided insight into the future of a field that he helped to found. Coiner of the term “cognitive radio” in 1998, Dr. Mitola reviewed the state of the art and proposed the future of advanced systems providing efficient and secure support for wirelessly networked technologies. He presented in tandem with Dr. Tamal Bose, co-leader of the research thrust at ICTAS and Director of Wireless@VT.

Other distinguished speakers at 2010 ICTAS Research Day included Dr. Nicholas Ashbolt, a senior research microbiologist for the Environmental Protection Agency, for the ICTAS Sustainable Water keynote. Dr. Thomas Zacharia, Deputy Director for Science and Technology at Oak Ridge Laboratory, presented on the central role of science and technology in creating sustainable energy options for the future. CDR Michael Smith, commander of the U.S. Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Dahlgren, VA, discussed the process of developing innovative technology from discovery to deployment. Dr. Anthony Atala provided an inspiring and forward-looking keynote on recent advances in regenerative medicine and their potential effects on health care practices for an aging population.
