This year, Heather Carreiro won first place for her story “Cooking in Lahore: An American Woman in a Pakistani Kitchen.”

According to Allen Cox, IFWTWA Board Member and Awards Committee Chair, “Heather brings her contact with another culture vibrantly alive and tells the story of her friendship with a Pakistani woman with humor and heart.”

Carreiro will be awarded a one-year regular membership in IFWTWA, including a year's subscription to Press Pass, the organization's newsletter; publication in Global Writes, IFWTWA's online magazine; and complimentary attendance at the annual IFWTWA Conference at Sea aboard Holland America Lines.

Diane Rezendes Khirallah swept up the second place award for her story “Festa Fare,” originally published in San Jose Mercury News. She will be awarded a one-year regular membership in IFWTWA, including a year's subscription to Press Pass; publication in Global Writes; and a cash award.

“We received many outstanding scholarship applications,” says Cox. “Both winning entries best exemplify the journalistic excellence IFWTWA looks for in its members. I am thrilled that these two fine writers will become a part of our organization.”

About IFWTWA: The International Food Wine & Travel Writers Association (IFWTWA) is a global network of journalists who cover the hospitality and lifestyle fields, and the people who promote them. In 1956 a group of prominent Frenchmen started rating restaurants. This small group, along with an American, conceptualized an international version of their organization. It became the International Food Wine & Travel Writers Association when formally created as a non-profit organization in California in 1981.
