President of EthoTech, Inc. Takes His Office to the Jungle in Central America
John Stulak, President of EthoTech, Inc. moved himself and his family adjacent to a jungle in Costa Rica to prove that even senior management of a company can collaborate virtually with his team, vendors and customers alike without missing a beat.
Hoschton, GA, October 20, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Remember when telecommuting became common practice in the 1990’s? With the rise of the Internet, workers could work from home and actually increase their productivity while company profits would rise at the same time.
John Stulak, President of software company EthoTech, Inc. http://www.ethotech.com has taken it one step further. He actually moved himself and his family adjacent to a jungle in Costa Rica to prove that even senior management of a company can collaborate virtually with his team, vendors and customers alike without missing a beat.
The fact is that American companies are embracing virtual work at an unprecedented rate. In a survey of U.S. businesses with between 20 and 99 employees, the Yankee Group found that 79% had mobile workers, while 54% had telecommuters, with an average of eight telecommuters per company. (Source: Yankee Group) It is estimated that 100 million U.S. workers will telecommute by the end 2010.
Stulak wanted to prove that face-to-face interaction with the President wasn’t the only way to build trust and teamwork. Armed with all the newest technology and best practices, he felt that he could connect productively with people anywhere, anytime. He committed to a year-long stint in the jungle of Costa Rica to prove his point.
Why Costa Rica? Stulak was intrigued by research that showed that there were pockets of the world that have large populations of centenarians (people who live to be 100 years old). Costa Rica turns out to be one of them. Good schools for his daughter and an environment friendly to Americans and the American business spirit were both critical. Beyond these criteria, Stulak’s mantra was “all I need is a laptop and internet, and I’m good to go.”
"The Costa Ricans’ simplified lifestyle,” said Stulak, “is a key factor to their longevity. Our sensory overload in the United States makes it difficult. The whole year we were down there, we didn’t have a television. Now that we’re back in the U.S., we don’t have a TV now and don’t plan on getting one. We now have incredible conversation within our family and we get much more creative with our time. And that includes being more creative – and productive – with my business."
Adds Stulak, “The only thing I don’t know how to duplicate here is the howler monkey alarm clock. They would literally wake us up every morning, in addition to the birds, horses, and roosters.
"One thing I’ve proven to myself, our Partners, and our customers is that EthoTech can operate from anywhere in the world. The nice thing about technology is that I can hire someone from anywhere, allowing me access to the right people in order to grow EthoTech."
