Ronald McDonald House of Northern Nevada and Solar Universe Make It the First RMH to Go Solar in Nevada
The Ronald McDonald House Charities of Northern Nevada is the first in the State to go Solar.
Sparks, NV, October 21, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Ronald McDonald House Charities of Northern Nevada, Advanced Green Builders, dba Solar Universe, announced today a new 32kW ground-mount photovoltaic (PV) solar electric system at the Ronald McDonald House of Northern Nevada at 323 Main St. Reno. This is the first Ronald McDonald House in Nevada to use solar energy to help power the House that supports families with seriously ill children in local hospitals.
“We at the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Northern Nevada decided to go with solar to help us become more energy independent. In doing this we have drastically cut our operating expenses. Since we are dependent on the community and our donors and the generous donations they bestow upon us that money will now be put toward helping the families that need us. Without this that would not be possible,” said Marty Ozer, Executive Director.
Each year the Ronald McDonald House in Reno serves over 300 families, and the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile serves over 5,000 children. The Reno Ronald McDonald House opened in 1987. The House welcomes families of seriously ill children who live more than 30 miles away from Reno and have a child undergoing treatment at a local hospital or clinic.
Through their community outreach programs they address the health and education needs of children in our community. The programs include: Travel for Treatment (1992), RMHC Outreach Grants (1998), the RMHC U.S. Scholarship Program (2000), and the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile (2003). These additional programs allow them to help a greater number of children and families in the area.
The Ronald McDonald House of Northern Nevada solar electric system will produce an average of 52,692 kilowatt hours (kW/h) per year. The environmental offset is equivalent to curtailing the release of 101,610 pounds per year of carbon dioxide (which promotes global warming). Driving 112,596 miles in an average car emits an equal amount. To offset the yearly emissions, it would require planting 254 trees a year.
The solar installation was designed and constructed by Advanced Green Builders, dba Solar Universe, and consists of 144 Suntech 210 polycrystalline modules. These modules are among the top-ranked in the industry in PV USA (PTC) ratings, which are quickly becoming universally accepted standards for measuring real-world module energy production and performance. Sunny Boy, supplied the inverter.
“This is the first Ronald MacDonald House in Nevada to go solar,” said Dominic Gentile, General Sales Manager at Solar Universe. “Here at Solar Universe we wanted to give back to the community and what a better way to do it than to help Ronald McDonald House become energy independent.”
