Outskirts Press Presents K9 Heroes, Honors the Dogs of War, by Nicole Arbelo

Denver, CO, October 27, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Since the War on Terror began, no other book has been written about the teamwork of K9 handlers and their four-legged partners serving our country in Iraq and Afghanistan. Military dogs have long been used in combat, but when their service was over they were often euthanized or left behind. Today, when their tour of duty is over, these furry heroes are treated with more respect and honored for their incredible bravery and loyalty in combat. MWDs are used to scout, search, and rescue. Some are specially trained to detect explosives. Others are used as sentries, mascots, attack dogs, and guards. All are ready to lay down their lives for their handlers.

These are the stories that Nicole Arbelo was determined to uncover and share. She first ran across Sgt. Adam Cann’s story, a Marine and K9 handler, on www.AnySoldier.com and was surprised to see that he hailed from the same small town in Florida as she did. As she read about his tragic death, she wondered what had happened to his dog Bruno. Had he been killed in the explosion as well? After some research, Arbelo discovered that Bruno had been assigned to a new handler, Cpl. Justin Granado, and she contacted him. From there began a new friendship—and an idea for a book as well.

Dozens of interviews later, K9 Heroes was born. The book is lavishly illustrated with over 100 photographs and the touching, often heart-wrenching stories of soldiers and their dogs. Arbelo also has a following of over 6,000 on Facebook—“K9 Heroes”—where she posts the latest news in the world of MWDs, police dogs, and Search and Rescue dogs, and brings together handlers and amazing people that continuously send care packages to the deployed K9 handlers and their military working dogs.
