Pets for Patriots Launches Program for San Antonio Veterans to Connect with Shelter Pets
Charity partners with San Antonio, Texas animal shelters and veterinarians to help veterans and service members honorably adopt at-risk shelter pets
San Antonio, TX, October 30, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Pets for Patriots, Inc., a not-for-profit that connects loyal shelter pets with our country's loyal service men and women, is joining forces with animal shelters and veterinarians in San Antonio, Texas to increase the adoption of adult and at-risk shelter pets.
Working with Pets for Patriots, the City of San Antonio Animal Care Services (ACS) gives veterans, wounded warriors and their families the gift of unconditional friendship and love, and provides homeless pets a second chance at life.
“I’m thrilled to be giving back to the veterans who have given so much for us,” says Gary Hendel, ACS’ executive director. “San Antonio is focused on finding a home for every dog or cat that enters our facility and we’re accomplishing this, one dog and cat at a time. We have a long way to go, but every placement to a veteran in need is a step in the right direction.”
In support of the charity’s mission to make military pet ownership affordable, City Veterinary Hospital in San Antonio will provide an ongoing 10% discount off all veterinary fees for any eligible dog or cat adopted through the Pets for Patriots program.
Individuals are eligible from any United States armed forces and at any stage of their careers: active, reserve, retired or veteran, as well as those transitioning to civilian life. Eligible adoptions include a dog or cat, at least two years old, dogs over 40 pounds and special needs pets. Joining Pets for Patriots is entirely free.
“Our goal is to accelerate the adoption of harder-to-place pets that we know can be excellent companions to our veterans and service members,” says Beth Zimmerman, founder and executive director of Pets for Patriots. “Working with not-for-profit animal welfare organizations and veterinarians in San Antonio, we can get these animals rehomed in a sustainable way, to the benefit of pet and person.” She adds, “We’re proud to have ACS in our program and support their goal to become a no-kill by 2012.”
Companion pets provide real physical and emotional benefits to owners and their families, including those coping with mild post-combat stress or traumatic brain as a result of their military service. Pets for Patriots is piloting an adoption program with the AW2 Wounded Warrior Program at Fort Carson, Colorado and is a national partner of the Real Warriors Campaign, which aims to reduce the stigma of PTSD and other psychological trauma among combat veterans.
“Injured veterans need our help,” says Hendel, “and Pets for Patriots is a wonderful program that allows a second chance for the animal, too.”
Those interested in the program must first apply through Pets for Patriots and provide proof of their military service. Approval typically takes a day or two, after which veterans can visit ACS for assistance in choosing their new best friend and City Veterinary Hospital for ongoing care.
