Colonial Heritage Announces Success of First Annual Pickleball Tournament

Colonial Heritage’s First Annual Pickleball Tournament Was a Huge Success.

Williamsburg, FL, November 03, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Residents of Lennar’s active adult community, Colonial Heritage in Williamsburg recently announced the success of their First Annual Pickleball Tournament.

As one of the fastest growing sports among seniors in the United States, the First Annual Colonial Heritage Pickleball Tournament drew more than 50 players from as far as Washington State, Michigan, Maryland, North Carolina, Richmond, Northern Virginia, Chesapeake and the greater Williamsburg area. One hundred and thirty matches including singles and doubles were played during the two-day event and gold, silver and bronze medals were awarded to the winners.

“Our first annual tournament was a huge success,” said Page Sutton, Colonial Heritage resident and tournament organizer. “Pickleball in Williamsburg was non-existent four years ago and now it is one of the most popular sports for active adults. The participation we received was phenomenal and speaks volumes about how much people enjoy playing pickleball.”

A cross between ping-pong, badminton, racquetball and tennis, pickleball is simple for beginners to learn but can develop into a fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players.

The sport has gained in popularity because it offers a much lower impact athletic option to tennis. Because of the smaller court and slower pace of the game there is less pounding and stress on body joints. Pickleball mostly relies on concentration and friendly competition rather than speed and power.

The Tournament’s major sponsor this year was the community’s developer, Lennar.

“We were proud to sponsor the First Annual Colonial Heritage Pickleball Tournament,” said Jon May, area sales manager for Lennar’s Virginia Division. “Colonial Heritage is a very dynamic community and this tournament is just one of the countless examples of residents enjoying the active lifestyle that Colonial Heritage offers.”
