Semba Biosciences Announces Partnership with Orochem Technologies to Develop Technology for Pharmaceutical Manufacturing
Kegonsa Capital Partners portfolio company Semba Biosciences, Inc., and Orochem Technologies, Inc. have entered into an agreement to develop novel equipment for commercial manufacturing of pharmaceuticals. When applied to large-scale manufacturing, the equipment will perform an automated purification process that is up to twenty times more productive than current methods. This improvement will reduce health care costs by making therapeutic drugs more affordable.
Madison, WI, November 12, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Semba Biosciences, Inc., and Orochem Technologies, Inc., have entered into an agreement to develop novel equipment for commercial manufacturing of pharmaceuticals. When applied to large-scale manufacturing, the equipment will perform an automated purification process that is up to twenty times more productive than current methods. This improvement will reduce health care costs by making therapeutic drugs more affordable.
The process performed by the equipment will use Simulated Moving Bed (SMB) technology. Semba Biosciences manufactures proprietary SMB instruments for the separation of chemical and biological compounds to the research community. Orochem Technologies provides products and services including equipment, chromatography stationary phases, and separation methods that incorporate the SMB process to the pharmaceutical industry. Financial terms were not disclosed.
“We are excited to collaborate with Orochem to develop new separation processes that Orochem can use for large-scale manufacturing,” said Semba Biosciences President & CEO Robert Mierendorf, Ph.D. “Orochem’s world-class expertise in SMB manufacturing is an ideal complement to Semba’s proprietary instrumentation and will provide pharmaceutical companies and, ultimately, health care providers and patients with a reliable method to produce drugs at purities that cannot currently be obtained in a cost-effective manner.
“This collaboration expands the application of Semba’s technology and strengthens our position as a trusted source for innovative products,” Dr. Mierendorf added.
“We have successfully used Semba’s patented bench-scale SMB technology to perform separations of over 50 pharmaceutical compounds,” said Orochem Technologies President & CEO Asha Oroskar, Ph.D. “Developing large-scale capability based upon the bench-scale technology will enable Orochem and its customers to increase efficiencies and lower production costs.
“This collaboration will allow Orochem to help its customers shorten time to market by providing a smoother transition between feasibility, development, and production stages in manufacturing processes requiring separation or purification,” said Dr. Oroskar.
About Simulated Moving Bed Technology
Simulated moving bed (SMB) chromatography is a continuous purification technique that has higher throughput and requires up to 90 percent less materials than regular batch chromatography. Compared with other large-scale separation technologies, SMB can provide high yield and high purity in a relatively short time, and can reduce time to market while being eco-friendly.
