Solar Power Leader Solyndra Chooses Metrolight Electronic HID to Light 100,000 sq. ft. Facility
Retrofit saves 41% on energy consumption and reduces carbon footprint by 326 metric tons annually. Metrolight's electronic HID selected over T-5 fluorescent lighting solutions due to better energy saving and lower total cost of ownership.
Fremont, CA, November 12, 2010 --(PR.com)-- When leading photovoltaic system designer and manufacturer, Solyndra was looking for an energy efficient and sustainable lighting upgrade for its 100,000 square foot, “Tool Build” facility, they looked to Metrolight for the solution. The challenge faced was to deliver maximum light levels with maximum energy savings. The “Tool Build” area was illuminated by 300 ten year old 400 watt HID units suspended at just under 25 feet high. The average foot candle readings registered about 30 foot candles much too low for the precision manufacturing taking place in the area. The high tech manufacturing process demands a foot candle reading of 70fc.
“Our initial analysis showed that in order to reach the desired lighting levels, we would have to add another 150 400 watt HID units.” said Mario Lopez, Solyndra Project Manager. “We considered a switch to T5 fluorescents but that would have involved a lamp, fixture and ballast retrofit. Ultimately, we chose the state-of-the-art Metrolight Electronic HID solution because it met our lighting and energy saving requirements and at a lower total cost of ownership.”
National electrical supplies and lighting distributor, Munro Distributing Co. served as supplier for the Metrolight solution, “We reviewed a variety of energy efficient lighting solutions with Solyndra and the system that delivered extraordinary energy savings, light quality and the required light levels was the Metrolight Electronic HID retrofit,” said Brian Munro, Munro Distributing Co.
The Metrolight Electronic HID retrofit delivered superior lighting quality with the more efficient point source lighting versus the flat volume of light produced by the linear fluorescents. It also provided higher energy savings and lower cost of ownership, a $130,000 savings when compared to the fluorescent solution. With flexibility built-in, the Metrolight electronic ballasts have full digital and analog control capabilities.
“We worked closely with Solyndra and Munro Distributing to determine the best lighting solution for the space,” said Aviv Ben-Abraham, Metrolight’s US Technical Manager. “Our analysis showed that both the important energy savings and required light levels could be easily attained by using the Metrolight 250 watt electronic HID ballasts without requiring additional ballasts, using existing locations and thereby avoiding rewiring and additional costs.”
Solyndra went with the Metrolight recommendation and replaced the 400 watt magnetic HID fixtures with the Metrolight SmartHID™ 250 watt electronic fixtures. The Metrolight retrofit resulted in an energy savings of 41% or an annual reduction of 453,743 kWh which translates to a total annual savings of $68, 061 on Solyndra’s energy bill and an annual reduction of 326 metric tons of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere. Solyndra was able to meet its important light level and energy saving requirements and, at the same time, reduce maintenance by 50%.
“Meeting Solyndra’s lighting requirements while reducing energy costs is a testament to Metrolight’s technical expertise and product performance when compared to competing technologies,” said Eli Ringer, VP Global Sales, Metrolight. “We were able to deliver on all counts—energy savings, increased light levels, flexible control, reduced maintenance and lowest cost of total ownership.”
Solyndra Project Manager, Mario Lopez added, “Solyndra is very pleased with Metrolight’s support for our project. Metrolight’s engineering staff and field support were excellent. The system performed exactly as calculated. The Metrolight solution gave us the lowest cost of installation and operation. We look forward to working with them again and would recommend Metrolight to other owners, contractors and engineers.”
