Chanukah Kicks Off in Jacksonville with Emphasis on Campus Activities

Jacksonville, FL, December 01, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Jewish University students usually go home for Chanukah as the Holiday tends to coincide with the Christmas Break. But this year, the Jewish Hybrid-Lunar Calendar places Chanukah almost a full month before the break.

“We took this as a challenge to provide Jewish Students in Jacksonville with a hearty Chanukah experience,” said Rabbi Shmuli Novack, Director Chabad of Southside.

Chabad of Southside will be distributing, free of charge, Chanukah kits to all Jewish Students in Jacksonville. The kits contains candles, a Chanukah Menorah (Chanukiyah), a dreidel as well as Holiday instructions.

Beginning at UNF's Osprey Landing on Wednseday Dec. 1st – the First Night of Chanukah at 8 pm a unique event will be held for students and the community is welcome to attend. This free event will feature the lighting of a large Chanukah Menorah, a Hot Dog dinner with traditional fried Potato Latkes, and a grand raffle of a brand new HP mini laptop.

On the second night of Chanukah Chabad will host a Menorah lighting at Florida Coastal Law School at the back deck at 7pm. Delicious Sufganiot (traditional Chanukah donuts) and latkes will be served.

“Being home for the Holidays would be great,” said Steven Bigio of Barranquilla, Colombia, Junior at UNF and member of the Student Government legislature, “but Chabad is our home away from home – so I will still be celebrating with family.”

These events are both free and open to the public. For more information visit them online.
