MatchPoint International Presents Tai Chi Tennis (American Form) at the 39th National Conference on Adapted Physical Education (USA)

San Diego, CA, December 01, 2010 --(PR.com)-- MatchPoint International (www.matchpointintl.org), a nonprofit organization that supports recreation, physical education, and therapeutic programs around the world, presented the sport of Tai Chi Tennis (American Form) at the 39th Annual National Conference on Adapted Physical Education in Riverside, CA on November 5, 2010.

Tai Chi Tennis originated in China in the early 1990’s. MatchPoint International developed the American Form in 2009. The sport combines the movements and style of tai chi with the basic elements of tennis, but without the need for a large court, a net, or a lot of space. Tai chi tennis uses a racquet with a rubber face and a plastic ball that is filled with sand. Instead of hitting the ball, players flip and catch the ball using the tai chi tennis racquets.

MatchPoint’s Executive Director, Lee Julia Whitwell presented and demonstrated Tia Chi Tennis to Adapted PE teachers from all over the United States. Lee stated, “The reaction from PE instructors to Tai Chi Tennis (American Form) was very positive and encouraging. We are very pleased to introduce this activity to Adapted PE instructors so that they can teach it to children and adults with special needs.”

A Northern California Adapted PE teacher who has begun using tai chi tennis with his students states, "The Tai Chi Tennis racquet and ball are very unique and really seem to captivate the kids I have used them with so far. Kids that I did not think would be interested in them and who usually have a limited ability to focus have spent over a half an hour playing with them. They are a great way to work on fine and gross motor skills as well as object control skills for kids with disabilities in my Adapted PE classes."

MatchPoint International is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization that provides sports training and equipment to recreation, physical education, and therapeutic programs, presently in the United States, Mexico, Peru, Haiti, Gibraltar, Tanzania, Korea, and the Philippines.
