Goose Creek, SC, December 03, 2010 --(PR.com)-- When the holiday season approaches, employees at JK Harris & Company, the nation’s largest tax representation company typically look for a community charity to rally behind. This year, they chose to hold a Thanksgiving food drive for Helping Hands of Goose Creek.
The company successfully donated 378 pounds of food to the charity in 2009. JK Harris employees rallied again this year, holding a second food drive for the local charity after learning the unemployment rate in Berkeley County is one of the highest in South Carolina, at over 12 percent.
“We were shocked to learn our company is located in the county hit hardest by the sluggish economy,” said Julie Boland, coordinator of the drive. “Many of us have friends or family here in the local area who could use the assistance of a charity like Helping Hands.”
Co-coordinator Lillie Johnson agreed, stating “I was shocked at how high the unemployment rate is here locally. We wanted to make a difference in the local community and Helping Hands needed our help.”
Employees met the challenge of beating last year’s goal by donating 591 pounds of food, which included 32 turkeys, cash and gift cards.
Executive director of Helping Hands, Michelle Maynard was overwhelmed at the sight of all the donations.
“Because of the donations of JK Harris’ employees, Helping Hands will be able to provide all of our families with a holiday turkey this year. I cannot thank everyone enough.”
Helping Hands of Goose Creek is a 501(c)3 charity located in Goose Creek, SC. For more information on donating or volunteering with the organization, visit their website at www.helpinghandsofgoosecreek.net.
