Foundation for Cancer Research & Wellness Launches Petition Drive to Overturn Institute of Medicine’s New Vitamin D Recommendations
Foundation for Cancer Research & Wellness finds the Institute of Medicine's (IOM) recent report concerning necessary vitamin D consumption levels to be profoundly disappointing, especially as it relates to cancer and other disease prevention.
Harrisburg, PA, December 04, 2010 --(PR.com)-- New government guidelines suppressed the reports of 14 of the world’s best-known vitamin D experts.
The Foundation for Cancer Research & Wellness today launched a Facebook Causes petition titled “IOM’s Vitamin D Recommendations are Not Sufficient.” The goal is to challenge and overturn the recommendations released two days ago by the Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) Food and Nutrition Board (FNB). Those guidelines recommended a small increase in vitamin D supplementation from 400 IU to 600 IU daily and limited the scope of the findings to bone health.
“This is a sad and frightening day for cancer prevention and recovery efforts,” said Greg Anderson, Founder & CEO of the Cancer Recovery Foundation International Group of Charities, parent of Foundation for Cancer Research & Wellness. “Sad because the recommendations around vitamin D were limited to bone health and frightening because the IOM suppressed the report of 14 of the most-noted vitamin D researchers in the world. The IOM report is outrageous for all it omitted. The whole truth must be made known.”
Foundation for Cancer Research & Wellness has filed a federal Freedom of Information request to gain access to the 14 suppressed reports.
In the past decade, thousands of studies have shown that most North Americans who live above the 35th-degree parallel, a line that runs roughly from Los Angeles, CA through Atlanta, GA, are deficient in vitamin D. That deficiency has been correlated with a host of diseases including heart, stroke, diabetes, and most notably breast, prostate and colorectal cancer. Further studies have shown vitamin D supplementation at 2,000 IU per day can actually prevent the onset of up to 77-percent of some cancers.
“These facts are particularly important in corporate wellness programs,” said Anderson. “Vitamin D supplementation promises better health to millions of employees. It also can help lower healthcare costs and reduce absenteeism due to sickness. Yes, we still need to encourage healthy eating and exercise. But the missing ingredient in most corporate wellness programs is this single vitamin.
“I have been at this work for over 25 years,” continued Anderson. “In our early days, the science was not there to support our common-sense claims regarding nutrition and exercise in integrated cancer care. Today the scientific evidence is overwhelming. But it is now ignored by our government. This is exceedingly frustrating and totally unacceptable. I stand by our recommendations for adults to supplement with vitamin D at the rate of 2,000 IU per day. And I further call on the IOM to immediately respond to our Freedom of Information request.”
