MUMC Recognized for Improving Quality While Reducing Costs
Memorial University Medical Center (MUMC) in Savannah, Georgia, has been recognized for quality performance in a nationwide hospital quality improvement project. The Premier, Inc. healthcare alliance QUEST: High-Performing Hospitals initiative is a voluntary, three-year program that includes 157 not-for-profit hospitals across 35 states. This is the second year in a row MUMC has received this recognition.
Savannah, GA, December 08, 2010 --(PR.com)-- For the second year in a row, Memorial University Medical Center (MUMC) in Savannah, Georgia, has been recognized for quality performance in a nationwide hospital quality improvement project.
The Premier, Inc. healthcare alliance QUEST: High-Performing Hospitals initiative is a voluntary, three-year program that includes 157 not-for-profit hospitals across 35 states.
Based on patient outcomes, MUMC received awards for top performance in the following areas:
-Save lives by eliminating avoidable hospital mortalities.
-Safely reduce the cost of care by reducing the costs for each patient's hospitalization.
-Deliver the most reliable and effective care, ensuring that patients receive every recommended evidence-based care measure.
“The QUEST project allows us to compare our mortality data, costs, and patient outcomes to other hospitals. By constantly measuring and critiquing our own performance, we make sure we are providing the safest, most reliable, and cost effective care for our patients and their families,” said Ramon Meguiar, M.D., senior vice president and chief medical officer at MUMC.
It is estimated that in two years, QUEST hospitals have saved 22,164 lives, reduced costs by $400 per patient, and provided evidence-based care to an additional 43,741 patients. If all hospitals nationwide were to achieve the improvements found among QUEST participants, they could save an estimated 63,801 lives and $22.6 billion in costs.
QUEST was developed in partnership with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement to springboard hospitals to new levels of performance. QUEST used data from Premier’s clinical database to determine the “baseline” level of performance in cost, mortality, and evidence-based care at participating hospitals. The hospitals were then challenged to overcome the main factors that lead to deaths, errors, and excessive costs, and measure themselves against one another to achieve top performance.
The Premier healthcare alliance is more than 2,400 U.S. hospitals and 70,000-plus other healthcare sites working together to improve healthcare quality and affordability.
