Kids’N’Snow Weekend West Yellowstone Montana December 16-19, 2010
Kids’N’Snow is a special weekend in West Yellowstone, Montana filled with winter activities, games, and classes, just for kids. Activities begin Thursday evening, December 16th with the annual Holiday Stroll and last through Sunday, December 19th, 2010. A full list of activities is available at www.kidsnsnow.org.
West Yellowstone, MT, December 10, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Kids’N’Snow is a special weekend in West Yellowstone, Montana filled with winter activities, games, and classes, just for kids. Activities begin Thursday evening, December 16 through Sunday, December 19th. A full list of activities is available at kidsnsnow.org.
Kids’N’Snow headquarters will be located at the West Yellowstone Visitor Center, 30 Yellowstone Avenue from Thursday through Sunday afternoon. Here, kids can pick up their "Passport" that contains a printed schedule and map. After completing three activities, kids can come back for a special reward.
The Visitor Center will also be the location for three free classes on Saturday morning. At 8:30 Bonnie Whitman and her specially trained search-and-rescue dogs, Auggie and Gator, will present "Hug-A-Tree." This program about wilderness safety is designed for children from 5-12 years of age. This fun interactive hour will teach kids what to do if they are lost in the woods including hands-on skills for shelter, staying in one place, and getting familiar with search dogs. At 9:30 AM, a naturalist from the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center will bring some of the Center’s live raptors (birds of prey) and explain about the special adaptations that allow them to survive Yellowstone winters. At 10:30 AM, avalanche expert from the Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center and learn all about avalanches and snow safety.
The Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center is offering special winter kids classes each day at 1:00 PM. Discover how all things are connected with "The Mountain That Loved A Bird," dissect an owl pellet, or discover how people and animals adapt for snow with "Ready, Set, Snow!"
There are outdoor activities each day. On Friday afternoon or Saturday morning, join a Joanne Girvin, a Hebgen Lake District Forest Service Ranger, for a one-hour program to "Enjoying the Outdoors on Snowshoes" perfect for snowshoe beginners. Yellowstone Park ranger Rich Jehle will offer a "Yellowstone Snowshoe Walk" on Sunday morning. Discover Yellowstone’s fascinating winter ecology while wearing snowshoes on this 2-mile walk into the park along the Riverside Trail. WYSEF (the West Yellowstone Ski Foundation) is also offering a 2-hour "Ski Games" program on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. Kids aged 13 years and younger are encouraged to play on skis through activities such as a relay race, an obstacle course, musical chairs, and a sprint. Parents are encouraged to cheer on all the little skiers.
On Friday, kids (and families) can get a glimpse of Yellowstone in winter through a unique oversnow snowcoach ride. "Snowcoach Samplers" will be offered four times on Friday and feature a 2-hour ride into the western meadows of Yellowstone Park. The snowcoach rides are free, but a Yellowstone Park pass is required.
The Yellowstone IMAX Theatre is offering the movie "Yellowstone" free to kids (1/2 price for adults) on Friday afternoon and "S’mores and Skating" will take Friday night from 6:00 to 9:00 PM at the West Yellowstone Ice Rink. This free event includes hot chocolate, S’more makings, a warm fire, music, ice skating, and kids toboggan hill. A limited number of ice skates will be there as well but arrive early for the best selection.
Join the Holiday Fun on Saturday evening (5:00 – 8:00 PM) at the Union Pacific Hall with activities including storytelling, kid’s arts and crafts, and Santa. Local snowcoach businesses will provide snowcoach shuttles from lodging locations.
"Kids'N'Snow is a great program to get kids outdoors in winter. Being able to introduce kids to winter activities in a fun and safe environment is so important. The snow safety and Hug-A-Tree programs are so important for young children. As a parent, I wouldn't miss them," reinforces Kate Leonberger, co-founder of Kids'N'Snow.
With the help of many partners, Kids’N’Snow is offering these programs for free or reduced cost. A limited number of children’s snowshoes and skis are available at no charge for specific activities, but must be reserved ahead of time.
