About The Author
Elspeth Benton has an extensive career in early childhood education, which she incorporates into her book, adding an unusual facet to this mystery story. She has an MA in Early Childhood Education, taught parenting classes through Pasadena City College, directed a co-op preschool, and two childcare centers in southern California. She lives in Santa Rosa, California, near her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Recent Reviews:
“Tapiwa Moyo, a young Zimbabwean, moves to the United States with his family to pursue a career in Engineering. After an affair with an American woman, Moyo’s life suddenly becomes a dangerous web of murder, kidnapping, and espionage. Taking place at a childcare center in Southern California, Benton’s mystery keeps you on the edge of your seat.” – Spring Alumnae Quarterly, 2010. Mt. Holyoke College
“Elspeth Benton of Santa Rosa employs the unlikely pairing of Zimbabwe and a children’s daycare center at a prestigious technological institute in Pasadena as the settings for her murder mystery, “Crucial Time”….. Benton has an extensive career in early childhood education, which she extensively incorporates into her book, adding an unusual facet to this mystery story. A short glossary of words from the Shona language helps readers get a feel for the Zimbabwean culture while retaining authenticity to the characters’ conversations.” – S.D. The Bohemian October 2010
“Elspeth Benton’s writing is also commendable. She has a firm grasp on the conventions of murder mystery and at the same time falls into none of the traps of cliché that many of the popular titles do. Her turns of phrase are often enough to keep you turning the page, as listening to the soothing voice of the author is calming even during the most tension filled moments. Benton seems more at home in the comfortable scenes between characters sorting out fact for fact than in the rampant chase for a suspect. Even her villains are likely to have a sit-down before drawing their guns. But that’s all part of the pleasantry of “Crucial Time.” It’s a mystery with a heart; a charming novel by a sharp minded new comer who I hope will pick up the pen again to deliver us another Hannah Cooper mystery.” – BookReview.com
