NPSA Applauds Tulane University Professors
The National Portable Storage Association congratulates two Tulane University professors for winning first place in a design competition that puts portable storage in the mix.
Kansas City, MO, December 16, 2010 --(PR.com)-- A duo of professors from Tulane University has won first place in a design contest for architecting plans for what they call a SunShower SSIP house. Judith Kinnard, professor of architecture, and Tiffany Lin, assistant professor of architecture, designed a house that can be built to run off a grid in the wake of an emergency.
“Part of the innovative design of the house is the way the designers created two distinct roof forms: A sun roof optimizes the collection of solar energy in photovoltaic panels and the shower roof is sloped to gather water,” according to an article in the Tulanian, the university’s official magazine.
The article described how the building materials for the 1,000-square-foot, two-bedroom, two-bathroom house are designed to fit into a standard shipping container. The house is made from energy-efficient steel insulated panels.
“We see more and more architects experimenting with portable storage units,” says John Finnessy, CMP, Executive Director of the NPSA, a nonprofit membership association, the NPSA is dedicated to the advancement of the portable storage industry. “This home may not be built from containerized storage, but it’s meant to fit into a portable storage unit for shipping. Imagine if you could ship a container and unfold it as a home. That could be the future.”
