ORNILUX Bird Protection Glass Awarded BuildingGreen’s 2010 Top 10 Product Award as Bird Safety Takes Priority in Green Building Practices
ORNILUX Bird Protection Glass by ARNOLD GLAS has been selected as one of BuildingGreen’s Top-10 products of the year by the editors of Environmental Building News and GreenSpec®. This recognition puts the issue of bird protection in front of green building professionals. It is a big step forward towards increasing awareness of the issue and facilitating the expansion of green-build-think to incorporate bird friendly design into architecture.
Ventura, CA, December 16, 2010 --(PR.com)-- ORNILUX Bird Protection Glass by ARNOLD GLAS has been selected as one of BuildingGreen’s Top-10 products of the year by the editors of Environmental Building News and GreenSpec®. This ninth annual award recognizes the most innovative and exciting green building products added to the GreenSpec® Directory during the past year or covered in Environmental Building News.
Hundreds of millions of birds are killed every year due to collisions with glass on buildings. Bird window strikes are rapidly becoming a major factor in the decline of bird populations. The reflective and transparent characteristics of glass make windows and facades dangerous for birds. They see the reflection of trees or the sky in a window or behind the glazing, but not the glass itself. It is not recognized as a barrier.
To prevent these collisions glass must be made visible to birds. This presents a global challenge as more and more glass is being utilized in architecture, especially with green building practices that focus on energy efficiency through the use of natural light. This translates to an increasing use of glass in design and therefore more dangerous conditions for birds.

As one of Europe’s largest and most innovative glass manufacturers, ARNOLD GLAS has turned its attention to making glass bird-safe as well as energy efficient with the introduction of ORNILUX.
Hillary Brown, FAIA, Principal, New Civic Works, and co-author of New York City Audubon’s Bird-Safe Building Guidelines states, "Increasingly, we need green products that serve more than single functions. Here's an exemplar glazing product that combines good thermal performance with a UV patterning capable of warning birds that glass is in fact a barrier."
With the knowledge that birds have the ability to see light in the ultraviolet spectrum, ARNOLD GLAS has developed ORNILUX Bird Protection Glass. The glass has a patterned UV reflective coating that makes it visible to birds while maintaining transparency to the human eye. ORNILUX has been tested by the Max-Planck-Institute for Ornithology in Radolfzell, Germany resulting in a significant reduction of bird strikes compared to standard glazing. As a multi-functional glass ORNILUX is the only transparent solution to bird strike. It is available in two insulated glass configurations with energy efficient performance attributes, or a triple laminated configuration for glass walls, guardrails and enclosures.
