Women & Infants Holds 127th Annual Meeting
Providence, RI, December 18, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Women & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island held its 127th Annual Meeting on December 14th at the hospital with a standing-room-only audience of community leaders, physicians and hospital staff.
Doug Jacobs of Providence, chairman of the hospital’s Board of Trustees, presided over the business meeting. In his opening remarks, Mr. Jacobs commented, “While we maintained the excellence of our clinical and academic programs over the past year, we did so with a new rigor and discipline which produced greater productivity, efficiency and process improvement success. We have faced challenge, and we continue to face challenge. But, most importantly, we continue to be the best resource for women and newborn babies in our area, and our reputation continues to grow regionally and nationally.”
Hospital President and Chief Executive Officer Constance A. Howes, of Providence, expressed gratitude to the physicians, volunteers, donors and staff at the hospital who have enabled Women & Infants to continue to care for women and babies with challenging medical conditions even in the face of financial challenges. She commented on the advances in technology implemented during the past year with the adoption of the Program in Women’s Robotic Surgery, the implementation of additional information technology for physicians, and the healing environment created in the new South Pavilion, which obtained LEED Gold certification for excellence in environmental design.
Ms. Howes noted, “We have raised the standard in our relentless push to ensure patient safety and quality towards making Women & Infants the safest place for women and newborns. We have established the goal of eliminating preventable harm.”
Financially, Women & Infants finished fiscal 2010 with a $13.6-million gain from hospital operations.
In other business at the meeting, Terrence Cahill, MD, of Lincoln, president of the Medical Staff Association, presented the Women & Infants’ Medical Staff Award to Brenna Anderson, MD, of North Kingstown, director of Reproductive Infectious Diseases Consultation in the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine. In addition, Kathleen Cote Bowling, MD, a long-time trustee of the hospital, presented a Certificate of Appreciation to Dr. Cahill whose term as Medical Staff Association president ends this year. The incoming president is Santina L. Siena, MD, of Providence.
This year, Women & Infants continued its tradition of recognizing excellence at the hospital with special awards created in honor of a pair of dynamic and dedicated individuals. The Richard P. Welch Award for Continued Excellence in Patient and Family Centered Care was presented to Noreen Mattis of Wakefield, director of Patient and Family Centered Care, who received the non-clinical award, and Ellen Cavanaugh, LCSW, of South Dartmouth, MA, medical home care coordinator in the Neonatal Follow-up Program, who received the clinical award. In addition, nurse educator Lori Ann Johnson, RN, of Cranston received the Mary Dowd Struck Award for Excellence in Nursing.
William F. Hatfield of Barrington, chair of the hospital’s Governance and Nominating Committee, announced the election of Margaret D. Farrell of Barrington, and the re-election of Roger Begin of Woonsocket as a trustee of the hospital.
Elected as new corporators of the hospital were: Robert Berry, MD and Diane Hovenesian of Medfield, MA; Keith and Karyn Bilezerian of Mansfield, MA; Lisa Bisaccia and Robert Naparstek of Canton, MA; Peter and Janine Lee of Providence; Susan and Paul Mouradian of Franklin, MA; Robin and Christopher Neale of Warwick; Kathleen and Roderick Ryan of Cumberland; and Tracey and Mark Savage of West Greenwich.
The theme of the meeting was the hospital’s excellence in research, including four video vignettes featuring five patients who are being cared for at Women & Infants Hospital, women and newborns whose treatment has been enhanced by the incredible research, compassion, and commitment to excellence that is Women & Infants Hospital.
