Heartbeats: Songs from the Soul Margaret Wingrove Dance Company

Margaret Wingrove Dance Company celebrates their 30th Anniversary with performances held January 6-9, 2011.

San Jose, CA, December 21, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Heartbeats: Songs from the Soul

Award-winning choreographer Margaret Wingrove celebrates 30 years of blending modern and ballet techniques with high energy and physicality at the Margaret Wingrove Dance Company. Recipient of The Metro’s Best of Silicon Valley 2010 for Most Inspired Modern Dance Company, the company has a style fluid enough to allow for bold experimentation in a wide range of work, including recent interpretations of Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie, Bo Caldwell’s The Distant Land of My Father and Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations.

In honor of the anniversary, Wingrove provides a look back at the company's acclaimed repertoire, then treats audience members to a thought-provoking performance of the premiere of “Transcend,” a dance based on author James Thurber’s quote: “Let us look back not in anger, nor forward in fear, but around us in awareness.” The work will be performed to Camille Saint-Saens’ “Symphony No. 1 in E flat Op.2.”

Other highlights include:

Two Into One (1984)

This work has special meaning for Wingrove as she choreographed it in San Francisco while working with the wonderful dancer/teacher/ choreographer Lucas Hoving (1912–2000), who was one of the first members of the Jose Limon Company and later had his own dance company. Wingrove says, “I shall always remember his loving generosity of time and encouragement to me as an inexperienced choreographer just starting out.”

Snare Game (1987)

This work was choreographed for San Jose Cleveland Ballet dancers Melissa Mitchell and William Baierbach who performed it in New York City at the David Howard Showcase in June of 1988. On this program, Ballet San Jose dancers, Amy Briones and Jeremy Kovitch, perform the work.

Shatterings (1989)

This heartfelt work was created in tribute to Wingrove’s son, John who died of AIDS at the age of 24. Performed to music by Gabriel Lee, “Shatterings” appeared by invitation at the Timpany Center's televised "A Celebration of Courage" at the Flint Center and at the Santa Clara Convention Center "Names Project."

Tulips (1999)

Danced to the poem of the same name by Sylvia Plath

Company Dancer Lori Seymour reprises this work for which she received a Finalist Nomination for the Isadora Duncan Award for Performance. Wingrove also received a Finalist Nomination for the Isadora Duncan Award in the Choreography category.

Lenguaje De Incendios (Language of Fire) (2003)

This work is based on the following lines from a poem by Octavio Paz:"a street and a wall and a silent man up against a wall...Freedom is calling me to death, it is the eating of forbidden fruit..."
