Ridgefield, CT, January 01, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Len Rodman, CEO, President, and Chairman of Black & Veatch, talks with Robert Reiss on the CEO Show about building critical global infrastructure as head of an enterprise that has offices in a hundred countries and 8600 employees. Rodman describes the scope of Black & Veatch’s operations which concentrate on the market sectors: energy, water, and telecommunications; its services are primarily engineering, construction planning and management, plus operation of certain infrastructure facilities built by Black & Veatch.

Reiss asks about creating the corporate culture within Black & Veatch, and Rodman explains how it starts with attracting “the best and the brightest,” then setting goals for them, and creating an organization built around teamwork. Rodman emphasizes the importance of collaboration within the organization by “rewarding it and celebrating it,” making sure that the objectives of the client and Black & Veatch are clearly understood.

A distinguishing attribute of the business that Rodman and Reiss talk about is its ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan), and how this motivates Black & Veatch team members. Rodman goes on to relate the evolution of the Black & Veatch organizational structure and its contribution to internal collaboration all across the World. As Rodman put it, “We decided that it was critical for us to share the success and the risks of the company …” by providing the opportunity for stock ownership.

Later in the interview, Rodman and Reiss dialog about one of the most challenging problems facing our planet – the shortage of fresh water and its availability in major population centers, particularly near coastal cities worldwide. Rodman points out that the world’s supply of fresh water is finite, but the global population is expected to increase by 50% over the next several decades. Rodman goes on to state that the answer to fresh water supply is two fold: conservation on one hand, and desalinization on the other. The nexus he says is the large amount of energy needed to make fresh water from seawater, an issue that Black & Veatch and research centers around the world are devoting great attention.
