Stand Up Paddleboarding Popularity Rises as Prices Fall
Many people who once spent their time getting a tan, are trying a new form of beach and lake recreation called Stand Up Paddleboarding. Stand Up Paddleboarding is easy to learn and doesn't require catching waves to have fun. People love the sport because it’s fun, and a good way to get full-body workout.
Newport Beach, CA, January 11, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Some surfers still think SUPs are the SUVs of boarding – big, slow and unmaneuverable. But the truth is the sport of Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) is riding a huge wave of popularity across the U.S. – and across sweeping demographics that includes men and women of all ages.
“And the wave isn’t likely to crest any time soon,” said industry insider, Don Keith. “People who wouldn’t climb on a surfboard to save their lives in the past, are flocking to the sport of Stand Up Paddleboarding in droves.”
Tipping the scale at a surprisingly light 25 lbs (they look much heavier), these graphically appealing and technologically advanced Stand Up Paddleboards are making a splash anywhere there’s a body of water -- whether it’s negotiating ocean white caps during a competition, or gliding leisurely across a glassy, mid-western lake.
“Virtually anybody can SUP, and the learning curve is very short,” said fitness expert Rod Edmonson. “If a person can stand, they can probably learn to Stand Up Paddleboard. Plus, you’re getting a great total body workout as you have fun. I especially love the core workout you get, as a result of constantly shifting body weight on the board to maintain optimum balance.”
For Jennifer, 20, a college student in Orange County, California, SUP is all about fun and freedom. “I used to be a little envious of surfers, because they seemed to be having so much fun out on the water,” she said. “After a short lesson, I was out on the bay having the time of my life. I love being so close to the water, and the challenge of Stand Up Paddleboarding in different conditions. I rented my boards last summer, but this spring, I’m going to purchase my own SUP.”
According to many industry annalists, price is the only potential barrier keeping some people away from the sport.
“You can pay well over $3,000 for a board, plus hundreds more for paddles,” said Keith. “However, a number of websites, such as www.smoothsup.com, are keeping Stand Up Paddleboard prices extremely low, without sacrificing anything in quality.”
For example, smoothsup.com offers packages that include the SUP board, matching carbon paddle, safety leash and other items for $789.00, and that includes free shipping.
“That’s a significant savings for consumers,” he said. “As a growth industry, the worst thing we could do is price people out of the sport. For smoothsup.com to offer quality packages for Stand Up Paddleboarders at very low prices is obviously good news for people.”
