Art as Healing: Knowledge Exchange, at Erie Art Museum

Erie, PA, January 15, 2011 --(PR.com)-- The Erie Art Museum is partnering with Stairways Behavioral Health on an upcoming Knowledge Exchange, January 20, 2011, 6-8 p.m. A panel of art historians, clinicians, and therapists will discuss the role of “outsider art” and art as a powerful therapy tool to the backdrop of artist Chris Mars’ fascinating “Auto-Intervention” exhibition, on view in the Bacon Gallery through January 23, 2011.

Through Mars’ imagery - which simultaneously draws us in and repels us - he seeks to “create a voice for the voiceless; to offer love to the unloved and mercy to the condemned and banished.” The artist developed a deep personal connection to people with mental illness through childhood experiences of his own brother’s struggle with schizophrenia and the effects of its treatment. The event is free and open to the public. Sponsored in part by Stairways Behavioral Health.

Thursday, January 20, 2011, Erie Art Museum Multipurpose room
6-7pm: Tour of Chris Mars exhibit & light refreshments
7-8pm: Panel Discussion and Audience Q&A

A list of participating panelists is found at erieartmuseum.org.

About Stairways Behavioral Health
Celebrating 50 Years of Service ~ 1961-2011
Fifty years ago, the founders of Stairways Behavioral Health in Erie, Pennsylvania, recognized the potential healing power of art for people recovering from mental illness. From its very first days as a social rehabilitation program, Stairways has encouraged clients to explore and advance their artistic talent as a means of expression.

Today, Stairways continues the conviction of the founders through the progressive programming of Center City Arts, a unique and pressure-free community arts center open to clients, family members and the community.
