“The Glass Heart” is a reflection of Killion’s personal journey and path to hope, self-discovery and love using colorful characters and various metaphors, but its message resonates with a wide and diverse audience. It is a fairy tale for modern times that takes readers on a quest to find true love through the journey of a young girl who trades her beautiful glass heart for another, in order to please others. Recently, much has been reported in the media about bullying in schools – and the tragic consequences for kids who feel attacked, targeted or just different. Killion first wrote her story in 2002, but her message and mission have not changed. “I feel it’s more important than ever to get the message out to young people that it’s OK to be yourself,” Killion says. “In fact, each heart is special and beautiful because it is unique.”

The images of “The Glass Heart” story appeared to Killion on three separate occasions, as dreams. “As I began transcribing these images, I realized it was my own life unfolding in vivid detail,” Killion says. A beautiful book and a powerful message were born, and Killion worked with St. Louis artist Gary M. Lang to help bring her story to life through vibrant watercolor illustrations. The characters within “The Glass Heart” were not given physical attributes in order to enhance imagination and engage each reader on a very personal level. Instead, the artistic focus is on color, texture and the radiance of each heart in the story.

During the past several years, Killion has spoken to hundreds of students, women, workplace groups, battered women’s organizations and others to share “The Glass Heart” and its universal message of accepting the special beauty of every heart. Through her innovative K-12th-grade program, she asks students to “draw the colors of your heart” and then name their artwork with a “feeling word.” Some kids draw “happy,” “silly” or “electric” hearts, but others create “sad,” “angry” or “disconnected” hearts. These pictures can be used as tools by teachers to speak with the children and their parents about underlying issues. In fact, two teachers told Killion they believe her book helped save the lives of two children who were contemplating suicide.
