Currently two classes are forming for Emergency Medical Technician – Basic. The program follows the U.S. Department of Transportation National Standard Curriculum. Instruction areas include an overview of anatomy and physiology; assessment of injuries and illnesses; cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR); control of bleeding and shock; care of muscular skeletal injuries; childbirth; pediatric emergencies; environmental emergencies; lifting and moving patients; automatic external defibrillation; and assisting patients with their prescribed medications.
Students who successfully complete the course are eligible to sit for the Pennsylvania State practical skills evaluation and written examination. Students who pass both parts of the exam will receive certification as an EMT through the PA Department of Health.
Professional EMT and Paramedics are listed as High Priority Occupations across the state of Pennsylvania, according to the PA Department of Labor and Industry. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, job growth for EMT’s and Paramedics is projected to grow at the average job growth rate of 9% through the year 2018. The healthcare industry as a whole is expected to have an overall job growth rate of 22% through 2018, taking the top spot as the nation’s largest industry by the same year. According to EmergyCare’s Human Resources Director, Glenn Brown, “It’s no surprise that as the Baby Boomers age, the healthcare field is growing by leaps and bounds. Becoming a certified EMT provides a great avenue for lots of career options in healthcare. Many EMTs choose to make it a life-long profession while others decide to pursue additional medical training to become paramedics, nurses and doctors. Still others move to administrative areas of emergency medical services and healthcare.” Brown adds that in our own region, “The demand for EMTs continues to be high. EmergyCare reviews EMT applications on a monthly basis. We look for people with excellent medical and personal skills who have a passion for our life-saving mission.”
The two EMT classes currently forming will run February 1 – May 26, 2011. The Erie-based class will be held at EmergyCare’s headquarters at 17th and Sassafras Streets each Monday and Wednesday evenings 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. with four day-long Saturday classes as well.
