2011 Racing Season Underway as Canidae Racing Trophy Truck Races at Laughlin Desert Challenge
Armed with their new custom built 800 HP 454 CI Dougan small block Chevy powerplant, the Canidae Racing team took on the 17th annual SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge race in Laughlin, Nevada beginning on Friday, January 14, 2011.
San Luis Obispo, CA, January 19, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Driver Scott Whipple put the #95 Geiser built Trophy Truck in the 17th qualifying position out of 32 trucks with an average speed of 52.08MPH. This is very respectable considering the new motor was recently installed and still being broken in. Next up on Friday was the Laughlin Leap and it did not disappoint. With packed grandstands, the Trophy Truck drivers flew their 6,000 pound trucks through the air off a two-story high jump. With Justin ImHof charity auction winner Marlon Coffman of Abilene, Texas in the navigator's seat, Whipple jumped the Canidae Pet Foods / Lucas Oil Trophy Truck a remarkable distance of 120 feet, but was just edged out by the #77 truck of Robby Gordon. It was a great night for a great cause with all proceeds from the auction going to injured Baja 1000 motorcycle rider Justin ImHof and his family.

With a 17th starting position and two trucks leaving the starting line every 15 seconds, Whipple and navigator Patrick Gailey had their work cut out for them on Saturday as racing began. As their pack of two trucks left the starting line, the Canidae Chevy pulled a huge lead over its competitor. By lap 3 of the 8 lap race, Whipple was within a minute of the leaders and working his way up to the front. The new Dougan engine was performing perfectly as the truck powered through the sand and rocks. However, on lap 7 the output shaft in the transmission failed and the day was over for the hard charging team.
Come Sunday, even though the team could not get an official finish for the two-day event, they raced for pride and uses the track time for testing. Scott Gailey and navigator Johnny Stroschein took over the driving and navigating duties of the Canidae truck and had an excellent run as the team completed the 8 laps with a pace that would have had the truck in contention.
All in all it was a great weekend of racing and the team looks forward to getting back to the more traditional style of desert racing with the BITD Parker 425, on February 4-6. Please follow the team at www.canidaeracing.com as the team works towards a podium finish.
Canidae Racing would not be able to compete at this level if not for the support of their sponsors including Canidae Pet Foods, Lucas Oil, BFGoodrich Tires, Magnaflow, KC HiLites, Torco Race Fuels, Tap It Brewing Co., Fox Race Shox, Geiser Bros., K&N Air Filters, Racepak Data Systems, CalTex Freight, McKenzies, Specialty Fasteners, XRP Hoses and Fittings, Norco Tires, and Get Performance.
