Junior League of Long Island Requests Clothing Donations for Fourth Annual First Step Program
Junior League’s First Step Helps Long Island Women Re-enter the Workforce and Gain Independence.
Roslyn, NY, January 22, 2011 --(PR.com)-- The Junior League of Long Island (JLLI), a nonprofit organization of women volunteers, is asking Long Islanders to donate business-appropriate apparel and accessories for its Fourth Annual First Step Program, which provides professional attire to local women transitioning into the workforce. Donations of new and gently-used suits, dresses, shoes, briefcases and appropriate accessories will be accepted at the JJLI headquarters in Roslyn Village.
Now in its fourth year, First Step helps Long Island women in transitional homes re-enter the work force by taking the "first step" in providing free professional clothing for interviews and beyond. Participants are referred from local social service agencies, shelters, and food pantries to attend the event. Junior League members personally assist attendees with selecting appropriate clothing for their career. Lunch, manicures and child care will be provided to all participants for the day at no cost.
“By selecting business outfits for interviews and the first days on a new job, these women are taking the first step toward financial independence. First Step reaffirms the potential of all women to achieve self-sufficiency by helping them transition into the workforce,” said Shelley Wojtkiewicz, President of The Junior League of Long Island. “Donations from our fellow Long Islanders are essential to make this event a success. We all benefit when we pull together to help others in our community gain self-esteem and economic security.”
Donations are tax deductible and all styles and sizes are appreciated. The JLLI Thrift Shop is located at 1395 Old Northern Blvd., Roslyn. Please visit www.jlli.org for Thrift Shop hours. First Step donations may also be deposited in the Thrift Shop’s 24-hour donation bin.
